Summary
For 1st year med student Dazai Osamu, excellence isn’t a goal — it’s a requirement for being allowed to exist. Raised by his father Mori, Dazai has learned that anything below 100% is failure, freetime is indulgence, and parental affection is something one has to earn. Trying to uphold these impossible standards, he gets confronted with how coping mechanisms meant to maintain control can lead to losing it.
Enter Chuuya Nakahara: sports science major, easygoing, backed by a supportive family, and the last person Dazai wants as a roommate. As their contrasting worlds collide and the pressure on Dazai keeps building he is forced to ask himself: is the price of excellence really worth it?
At 15 he brought back a 97 on a test.
"What did you miss?" was all Mori asked.
"One question,"
"And why did you miss it?"
"I misunderstood—"
"You didn't prepare properly," Mori cut him off. "Careless. Do you want to be a doctor responsible for patients dying because of such mistakes?"
"No, sir."
"Then do better."That night, Dazai stayed up late, re-reading his textbook until the words blurred together, fueled by fear of what would happen if he made another mistake.

if satoru was convinced of one thing and one thing only, it was that he was a failure.
he failed suguru, back when they were eighteen.
he failed tsumiki.
and now, he was failing megumi, too.
satoru felt his perfect composure slipping away from him. felt his life crumbling away like an avalanche, one that he was trapped underneath.
megumi survived. when he woke up in the hospital, he screamed and shouted at satoru. he begged and cried for satoru to just let him die, sobbed into his knees about how he just wanted to be done, while satoru sat there and listened. quietly. attentively. he listened to the boy he had raised for ten years, the boy he had taken to all of his karate lessons and attended all of his parent-teacher conferences, beg for the mercy of death.
but satoru realized something, in that moment. he realized that, just as suguru had said, he was selfish; he didn't care how badly megumi wanted to die, how much he begged and cried for it, because he needed megumi to live. because he truly couldn't take another second of this eternal winter chipping away at his body, as if he was made of ice.
