Summary
Just ahead of a historically lethal snowstorm, Father Smith stumbles across a wounded stranger lying frozen in the forest - buried beneath the snow, half-alive, barely breathing. The good Samaritan that he is, Erwin sees no other option but to take him in.
Yet the stranger is difficult to place. He knows too little, and then he knows too much. He soaks up Erwin's religious teachings with ease, keeps his papers all in order, refills the priest's cup before he even realises it's empty. Levi is everything that Erwin could have ever prayed for - which is precisely the problem.
As Levi becomes more of a temptation, Erwin finds, to his growing horror, that he may not be the devout man he believes himself to be.
“My God,” Erwin sobbed, his chest heaving with need, his crotch aching, his two large hands cupping the delicate porcelain skin of Levi’s sole, cradling the fragile joint of his narrow ankle, kissing up and down with reverent desire. “My God, he has forsaken me, to tempt me with something as beautiful as you.”

There, on the thin and somewhat dirty mattress, it comes so naturally to imagine that he is simply sleeping. That the expression of peace on his sunken features is nothing more than a reaction to wistful dreams playing out in his unconscious mind.
Perhaps it's foolish to pretend, to play make believe about it all. Maybe it's more than foolish because to replace the reality undermines the sacrifice he made. The same sacrifice that Levi pushed him to carry out, for the sake of Erwin's tranquility.

“Can I trust you, Levi?”, Erwin murmurs, after, head to his back and water running cold between them.
He didn’t use to ask, before.
“Who else would you fucking trust”, Levi gets out, skin breaking in goosebumps. Erwin hums behind him.
“Who indeed”, he mutters.
Levi understands anger. He’s intimate with it. He understands Erwin thought a lot of his sacrifice and that to have this opportunity at the expense of all that sacrifice probably feels like an unforgivable sin. It fractured something fundamental between them. Most sacrifices do. Levi did not save him because he saw some hope for them; world peace and a happily ever after. He did it because he knew, in his heart, Erwin was only one black hearted enough to see this through.
Maybe that’s love; to see the absolute worst in someone and see it as salvation, still.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Erwin is still dying, just slower.
