Summary
There’s a hint of blue on the horizon, beyond pregnant black storm clouds, and Snafu watches the storm roll in with something deeply humbling settling into his bones. Sometimes it feels like he lives on the very edge of the world; the whole earth rolling out at his feet, a silent witness to the whims and changeable moods of the planet. His tiny little slice of pure nature in the middle of the great blue beyond, ocean stretching as far as the eye can see.

Summary
Sledge is struggling with the flimsy can opener they each got in their pack, hands unused to the motion. Distantly, Snafu wonders if the boy ever had to open a can for himself. "Here," he says, and offers Sledge his already open can. "Trade ya."
Sledge at least has the decency to quickly hide his surprise with gratitude as they switch cans. He looks down at his newly acquired meal with something akin to pride, and Snafu thinks that he wants to see him smile more.

Summary
Put simply, dynamic kinetic stability proposes that variation in a system which improves or maintains system longevity will persist, while any variation decreasing stability will be selected against. According to chemical kinetics, more complex molecules are usually more stable. Therefore, variations increasing the molecular complexity of system components will persist, because they also enhance the longevity of the system at large.
Or, how a complex relationship evolves between two unlikely partners: a worn-out gunner, Snafu Shelton, and an optimistic pilot, Eugene Sledge.

Summary
He wonders how long he had been sitting like that, knows that Snafu only turns on the radio when the quiet becomes too much to bear, and only hums like that when he’s lost in his own thoughts. Behind every door in that man’s head there’s a skeleton and another door without a key, he thinks. So he says, “Sure.” and drops it. “Anything good on the radio?”

Summary
In the fall of 1953, Eugene sends an ad to the San Francisco Chronicle. It reads:
Professional single male, late 20s, located in Dogpatch. Clean, considerate & responsible, seeking similar. Pets O.K. Smoking O.K. First month + security up front. Contact Eugene for details. Serious enquiries only.
Eugene is freshly divorced and outgrowing the life he had painstakingly made for himself after returning from war. Merriell is grieving, aimless, roaming the length of the Pacific coast looking for a place to collect himself. The first time they speak, Eugene is suffering a late summer nosebleed. Merriell had just pawned his mother's earrings for first month's rent. He moves in the same day.
feat. splinters, workwear, payphone calls, cruising. the delicate hot-house flower that is merriell. eugene at his most neurotic. sea fog & starlings & improbably hot first time sex. the inherent insanity of falling for your landlord.

Summary
Snafu puffed on his cigarette, mind on Eugene’s bible and his killing hands as he tramped through their ill thought out camp. Head on his shoulder as he slept, the warm weight of his body against Snafu’s side. It was making Snafu’s head twist in the worst way, because he knew about God and he knew about boys, but never considered the two together.

Summary
Eugene’s never considered himself a good actor. Snafu, though? Eugene glances to him, not hearing the words coming out of his mouth but reading his expression well enough. The way his eyes linger on the photograph as he hands it back, like he can’t bear to look away from the woman in the print.
He’d looked at Eugene like that, after he’d kissed him.

Summary
Snafu grins, the glowing tip of his cigarette dancing as he laughs at the way Eugene's sunglasses sit halfway down his nose. Dark shadows bruise the skin beneath his eyes, contradicting his good spirits, and Eugene doesn't understand why he's here. It's equally impossible to understand why he wants Snafu to stay.

Summary
He yearns across the few feet of muggy air that lie between him and Snafu. The most he’s had this week is Snafu’s foot pressed against his calf as they sleep. Or their fingertips touching on the no-man’s land between their bodies in bed. It’s not like them to be so far apart.

Summary
“I don’t know if we should be drinking on watch.” Sledge said slowly, and Snafu grinned for real.
“Sure we should.” He said, slow. He sat up and tugged on one of the straps of Sledge’s helmet. His breath smelt like liquor, and Sledge took a hasty swig to give his hands something to do. Snafu’s chest was shining with sweat, and for one crazy moment Sledge imagined running his tongue over one of his dark nipples. Snafu grinned, hazy slow, as if he could tell. “Ain’t nothin’ gonna get past the two of us.”

Summary
Hair so dark it seems to have stolen the heat from the day; hot all of its own accord when Eugene sinks his fingers into it. Snafu makes a pleased noise and settles down further into his seat, the low orange light of the evening transforming him into smudges of purple and violet, as indistinct as he is unreadable.

Summary
His explosion came without warning and without a chance to stop it. A strangled grunt, tears flowing hot and heavy from his eyes.
He threw his bible angrily into the dirt, fuck God.
God wasn’t here. God couldn’t help him. No one could help him. They were all going to die here.
Eugene struggles to cope with the aftermath of the Okinawan woman in the shack; Shelton helps.

Summary
Snafu, he was still a jagged edge, nerves raw and open and stinging under the salt of the bay. Uncomfortable, with his hunched shoulders and darting eyes, in a way that was almost nauseatingly familiar. Eugene touched his pinky finger to the back of Snafu’s hand, the two of them sat knee to knee, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder, facing the sea. Snafu’s mouth lifted in a smile, and he caught Eugene’s finger in his hand before he could move it away.
“Penny for them.” He murmured, and Eugene thought of the Alabama sun, of talk of death and war.

Summary
In five years, Eugene had run over this exact scene in his mind too many times to count. Sometimes, he’d yell. He’d curse him out, hit him if he was feeling particularly pissed off that day. Try and get it through his thick, mad skull that waking up alone on that train was the final nail in a coffin that Eugene had taken too long to claw out of. Other times, Eugene imagined embracing him, breathing in the familiar smell of sweat and gun oil as he silently forgave him for it all.

Summary
The problem wasn’t that he was seeing things. They all had these images that were burned into their minds. This only became a problem, if thinking of them turned into hundred-mile stares and when they couldn't push them down anymore. Snafu just had to push them aside, like Eugene pushed the thought aside that Snafu could be cracking up.

Eugene has to deal with a shell-shocked Shelton on Okinawa. Feeling unfit to care for Snafu, Eugene comes to the realization that mutual caring might as well be the only way to survive the war. -
