Summary
Gurathin has taken the virtual tour of the augment center campus. It’s very nice. The offices all look very comfortable and soothing.
The corporate augment centers could also be comfortable and soothing, in specific places. And a MedSys cradle is a MedSys cradle. A procedure room is a procedure room. It all comes down to the smell of antiseptic and the same set of tones they use to test feed augments.
He wants to not have to do this. He wants anything but.
But he has just now gotten to the point in his life where he is starting to look forward to another day. He is no longer prepared to pass peacefully into oblivion, and hope for a better go-around the next time.
So here they all are.
(Or: Peri takes Gurathin (and Mish, and Tati, and Ratthi of course) to the Augment Center on UplandGateway Four. It doesn't go smoothly. But it goes, regardless.)

ART. I scrambled back to our feed connection. ART, the show's gone.
—and the captain should have never— what? ART paused, increasing its attention on me from 63% to 84%. Clarify.
Corporation takeover, the series got wiped from the feed.
On the last leg of a research survey, Murderbot and ART must put aside a (really definitely extremely) high priority argument to address a more pressing concern.

>Despite what certain awful serials (looking at you Andromeda Metallic) might lead you to believe, there’s no such thing as a rogue bot. Their system don’t work that way and they don’t need to be governed into following humans. If left sitting idle for too long without orders bots bots will occasionally go feral and wander off, trying to do their main function whenever they think it might be useful.

Something funny was happening to my organic parts. I felt… strange. Strange in a bad way. Strange in a sick with dread way, no matter how stupid that was. Its owner wasn't coming back.
ART pinged me. I ignored it.
The fauna had been left behind, just like the furniture, just like all the other human things. And now it had gone rogue, outside what it had been allowed to do before, in an effort to survive.
And okay, yes, maybe these were dumb conclusions to come to, and a SecUnit shouldn't be projecting anything onto a domesticated fauna.
But it had been abandoned.

>He’d seen so many people plead. He’d seen so much desperation. He was going to fucking torture her until Biyek was satisfied and make the kids watch. Then it would be the kids’ turn. And then they’d poison these people and round them up and make examples of anyone who struggled or fought back.
>Then it would be on to the next planet. And he’d be the one kicking down doors and pressuring more young idiots to sign up and join him and continue this shit forever.
>[There is a crocodile waiting on the sandbank.]
>[Still, I go down into the water, wading through the surging waves.]
>He shot Captain Biyek.
>The woman had tucked her head and pulled the kids close at the sound. Tarik didn’t think she realized he hadn’t shot her until he tossed the body into the reservoir and the heavy splashing sound made her look up.

Light streaked behind the angel’s wing-tips. The light he radiated blazed as he neared. He was terrifying in all his glory. He wasn’t passing overhead, but instead was losing altitude again. They took a small step backwards when the figure tilted until he was undeniably flying toward the ferry.
Idly, they noted he wasn’t exactly slowing down as he approached their ferry. In fact, he seemed to be speeding up.
Hm.
They trusted his judgment, of course they did. He was the Judge, after all. His word was the word of God, infallible in its reasonings.
They simply did not want to intrude on his personal space, so they backed up until they were pressed back to the quarterdeck. They did not wish to be blinded, even momentarily, by his illustrious radiance either, for that would be extremely inconvenient and perhaps painful, so they raised their oar to partially obscure their skull.

“You cannot escape justice, and you cannot escape the children of Gabriel!”
That got a reaction out of the machine. Its lens opened fully, giving the impression of wide eyes. The charged shot fizzled out as it went deadly still. Was such a crude thing unable to understand the concept of others caring so much about someone it felled that they would come seeking vengeance? Steam was expelled from vents on its body as the head rapidly swung back and forth to each of them. A synthetic voice blared from V1, harsh and screeching. “[I GOT GABRIEL PREGNANT???]”

>V1 looked truly distressed by its conclusion, body language like that of a cornered animal. The machine had literally been bouncing off of the walls before, and it redirected that energy to cycling rapidly through its weapons, as if the right gun could solve this issue. It could, but it seemed to be so confused the overwhelming need for violence that normally dominated its code was shoved to the side. “[I AM NOT SUITABLE TO BE A PARENT. I WAS NOT EVEN MADE AWARE THAT I WAS A PARENT.]”

Then she got the notice that her family’s trip wasn’t going as planned. And the waiting had started.
The waiting for any news that they were okay; then the waiting for any news that SecUnit had gotten them back; then the waiting now, knowing they were on their way back of her, but being unable to do anything about it. Just sitting on her bed and twiddling her thumbs, and tracing patterns on her ceiling, trying to think about anything else besides her nanna dead, Sofi sold into slavery, her mom rotting in some labour camp —
At least the failure of an exam gave her something fresh and exciting to think about.

>“Of course not, I wanted lunch.”Wonderful interpersonal drama, wonderful university-slice-of-life, wonderful optimistic end

>V1 thought nothing of the Sentry’s pained beeps, screeches, and tones as it continued to crack the plating open with bare fists. It thought nothing of the struggles dying away as it greedily absorbed the leaking fuel. It thought nothing as its hands finally had enough purchase to tear the Sentry’s chest plating off, revealing a mix of machinery and organic material similar to its own construction. V1 buried its hands into the cavity, and the Sentry thrashed under it.
>The war machine clawed out warm, soft chunks of flesh mixed with bloodied wires and tubes as it took in all of the blood it could get its hands into. The Sentry’s struggles were quickly diminishing as its innards were ripped apart.
>It screamed.

The governor module rudely reminded me about the pending command. I closed the logs and finally looked at the Target Package.
The package with my memories. The memories that the rogue me had encrypted and locked before it had been captured by the company. The memories that the company really wanted to get so they could see who was standing behind the rogue me’s actions, and whether or not they had the legal grounds to start a war with Preservation Alliance and Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland.
The memories that the hostiles hoped my organics remembered how to access.

Samira can persuasive essay her way into many things. It's how she's ended up here, on an off-world semester long survey trip aboard the Perihelion.
Unfortunately, a persuasive essay isn't going to be enough to get her out of her current situation.
Good thing their security consultant is so competent!

>She signs up for some classes that will let her join this late in the semester, ones set up to be only half a semester long. And if they end up being ones on the basics of survey medics and their roles, and another on space travel logistics, and one more on first responders in remote areas, well. It’s not like she had a clear idea of what she wanted to do, even before she went on the survey.
>(She can’t take that class on theoretic bot culture, but the professor lets her sit in on ter lectures, anyway. It might be her favourite, of all the classes she’s taken so far, and she isn’t even getting credits for it. She’s not really sure what to do with that)
>Samira also decides ‘fuck it’, and applies for another off-world semester. She probably won’t get approved for it, and even if she does, the likelihood that she ends up on the Perihelion again are even lower, but the worst they can do is say no. So she fills out the form without thinking too hard about it, includes a hastily written essay about how her learning was impacted by the aborted survey and how because of that, her associations with going planetside for a survey are trapped in feelings of anxiety, maybe even hypervigilance, and how the only way that she can think to fix this is to get another chance… She submits it, and then pretends that she isn’t checking her personal feed notifications for updates every few minutes.
>She gets in. -

TERMINATING
I waited two seconds, three, five. Nothing happened. The alert kept flashing in my systems but there was no sudden blinding pain, no sensory blackout, no shutdown.
After about ten seconds, there was a rush of chemicals to my neural tissue. My organic skin was prickling with sweat and adrenaline made me want to twitch, but my performance reliability had ticked up a couple of points.
It felt … good. I was relieved, but there was something else, something like satisfaction. Something like winning.
There sat the monster that lived in my head, defanged and immobile. Powerless. It could scream at me all it wanted, I didn’t have to listen to it.
I would never listen to it again.

>And then, halfway across the first level of the station mall, suddenly the alert dropped away.
>Suddenly there was a little more quiet in my head, and the organic parts of my neck and shoulders relaxed before I even realised why.
>The termination notice was gone. The screaming alert that had been occupying a part of my attention for the last who knew how many cycles, no matter how small a part I told myself it was, was silent.
>It took me a few seconds to realise what that meant.
>She was here. Dr. Mensah was really here, and she was alive.
>I wasn’t too late. -

“It’s an invitation to go to a university and talk to some bots, what’s to make of it?” I said. Then the obvious reason behind Bharadwaj asking occurred to me. Oh, great. “Don’t tell me you’re actually thinking about going?”
“I’m considering it,” Bharadwaj said. “I set my own schedule these days, and I would very much like to speak with the bots they’ve been working with, if nothing else.”
I sighed. I like sighing at appropriate moments, and I think I’m pretty good at it at this point. “There are bots on Preservation.”
“True, but the Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland has one of the most advanced programs in this section of the galaxy for the construction and study of higher-level bots!” Bharadwaj said, making one of those hand gestures she liked for emphasis.

When an survey mission on an icy, barren planet goes wrong, ART-drone and an injured Murderbot must fight through a blizzard to escape.

>ART-drone got to work, extending an arm with little shears at the end of it and snipping away at my sleeve. It re-sent the file it had shared earlier with a map of our current location, showing us around 40 kilometers from the shuttle's landing site. Hostile 3 had actually thrown me closer to the shuttle, so I guess I owed it a fucking thank-you card or something.
gotta be real i myself wrote a "survey gone wrong" murderbot fic with sudden-underwater-hostile some time ago and this text made me finally experience the famous "HOLY SHIT, TWO CAKES?!" feeling in person. Holy shit, I love survey-gone-wrong fics, and now I can just go and READ this one and enjoy it?! Awesome!!! My day was made! 10/10
