Had he been with anyone else, this would’ve turned into a moment of quiet, comfortable silence. A perfect time for some introspection, maybe about how lucky he was to be here right now and other such things. It would be a minute to get lost in thought.
Instead, Tony crossed his arms and grinned in victory. “I told you New York is better than San Francisco.”
Ryland wouldn’t have it any other way.

The man reaches for a screwdriver, returning to fiddling with the gear in front of him, “What, you don’t want to? Are you embarrassed of us? Embarrassed of me? Really, kid, I thought that you—”
“I’m not embarrassed,” Peter rushes to defend himself, “I just… I don’t know. It’s weird. I live here. We’re basically going on a tour of my house. And half my classmates don’t believe that I’ve even stepped foot in the tower, so they’re all going to be weird about it tomorrow, and it’s… it’s weird. But I’m not embarrassed.”
“Great! If you’re not embarrassed, you don’t mind if I tag along, right?”
His eyes widen, and he gapes, mouth opening and closing wordlessly like a fish out of water. He thinks about Mr Stark meeting Dr Grace, and decides the longer he can go without an impromptu teacher-parent meeting, the better.

"Wait a second. Peter, was the Stark internship just a cover for being Spider-Man?"
Peter winces. "Yeah."
In a masterful act of self-control, Ryland refrains from swearing once more. "Are you saying he encouraged it?"
"No! Okay, well, just a little. But not really? I swear, Mr. Stark didn't do anything wrong!" Peter stammers. "He—"
"I've heard enough," he says firmly, cutting him off. Internally, though, Ryland wants to scream; maybe bash his head against a wall for good measure. Of course, what happened during college would come back to bite him; of course, it would. Because why would good things ever happen to him?
Or: Ryland Grace finds out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Consequently, he meets with Tony Stark for the first time in years, roughly two decades after their college hookup. This is a problem.

Summary
It’s been nearly 27 years since Eva Stratt forced Ryland Grace to board the Hail Mary and sent him off to his death for the greater good of mankind. Meanwhile, Eva and the Project Hail Mary team have been fighting a losing battle against the cooling sun—and their own demons—trying to make sure there were still people to be saved by the time the crew could send a solution home. Right on schedule, the beetles are returning to Earth, hopefully with the answer to saving the world. But Eva has something else to worry about; there’s every possibility Ryland Grace’s last words would be coming home, and all the time in the world couldn’t make her ready to face the consequences of her actions, or what will happen when her colleagues find out what she did to their friend.
It was time to find out if it was worth it for her to sacrifice Grace, and her soul, to save humanity. And to find out if she was ready to face him after all these years…
