How had Shane Hollander lived this long without cataloging all of the colors in Ilya Rozanov's eyes? Oceans of swirling blues and greens and golden flecks that reflected the summer sun. They had always been there, but now it was like he was truly seeing them for the first time. They made the world quiet.
The first thing Ilya Rozanov remembered about meeting Shane Hollander was his freckles. Even as a cranky seventeen year old, he was charmed by them, but seeing them up close, tanned from the summer sun, he realized they were actually a thousand tiny stars. He would never have guessed he would be entrusted to care for those freckles.
The universe works in odd ways.OR: Shane has a horrible panic attack hours before his parents are coming to the cottage for dinner with them, and Ilya makes it his goddamn mission to take care of the situation in the most Ilya way(s) possible: doting, clinical level understanding of panic attacks borne from childhood PTSD, lots of love, Slavic-military family level cleaning, humor, and vodka (not because he's nervous, just you know. He could really use a stiff drink).

Hayden wanted to apologize but wasn’t even sure what to apologize for. “If you’re so embarrassed about your choice of boyfriend, maybe get a better one?”
It wasn’t any worse than anything Hayden had said before. In fact, it was probably fairly tame as far as insults went, but it didn’t matter. Hayden could see the moment something inside of Shane detonated. One minute Shane was standing only a handful of feet away, his suit jacket clutched in his hands, and the next the jacket was dropped to the floor in a heap, and Shane’s hands were fisted in Hayden’s shirt, his back slamming against the wall.
Holy fuck, he thought. Shane is going to fucking hit me.

or, Hayden makes one too many shitty comments about Rozanov and Shane finally snaps. And while he never actually lands a blow on his best friend, the defeated way he talks about ending their friendship has Hayden rattled. After the Centaurs plane makes an emergency landing, Hayden knows he needs to do everything in his power to make it up to his best friend, with Jackie's help of course.

Summary
The second Shane hit the ice, Ilya knew something was wrong. Bood didn’t mean to hit him, it was a clean play and an even cleaner hit. A regular hockey hit. But the way Shane landed and slid into the boards, seeing the blood but not knowing where it was coming from, had Ilya’s heart stopping. Even now, almost three hours later, it didn’t feel like his heart had started again. He could hear Bood in the bed next to him asking him something, but all he could do was refresh the tab ‘shane hollander injury update’ and hope some news article somehow leaked information. He knew he didn’t actually want that to happen because Shane deserved privacy, but he was dying inside not knowing if his boyfriend was okay.

All Shane knew was he was in pain, the medication wasn’t masking it, and he needed Ilya. His parents were both in the room, as was Hayden, doing their best to figure out how to get ‘ily to the hospital.
