Summary
Ilya clapped his hands decisively, the same way he did when the team was about to hit the ice. "Let me be your wingman. This will be fun."
He meant it. He wanted to encourage Shane to embrace this, to see if it could help take some of the edge off this tense, tightly wound man sitting across from him.
Shane bit his lip, and Ilya found his eyes fixating on his plush mouth. Ilya would have to organize a line, complete with a velvet VIP rope the first time he took Shane out on the town to get laid. He was stunning, and he seemed to have yet to realize it.

Shane is drafted to the Centaurs two years after Ilya. Ilya takes it upon himself to be rookie Shane's bisexual fairy godmother/wingman, and then immediately regrets it because he catches feelings. -

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
Right???

The Centaurs win the cup and celebrate late into the night. In the morning, Shane wakes up in an alternate universe - one where he never got hard in the shower and he and Ilya never hooked up.

And Shane, not for the first time, thinks even farther back. To that day in the showers after their CCM campaign shoot. Alone under the spray, and confronted with Ilya’s perfect body, Shane’s body reacted. And truthfully, he’s always been quick to react when it comes to Ilya.
But to think… if he could just control his dick, none of this would have happened.
This perfect life he’s living. Married to the man of his dreams. Living and playing in his hometown, with his parents only 10 minutes away. With his sweet puppy, Anya. Celebrating his fourth ever Stanley Cup win. All thanks to one wayward boner.
For a wild second, Shane thinks about saying that to Wyatt.

Summary
After I retold the television show Heated Rivalry from the point of view of Ilya Rozanov, my brain decided I needed to write the exact same thing, but from the point of view of Shane Hollander, so I not only did I need to match the show, but also my own prior work. WHEE!
So that's what this is: a novelization of the television show that is ALSO a companion piece to Bad Thing.
I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. So where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.
This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Shane's point of view.
