The time that Rachel - Rachel who’d never taken an interest in wildlife, Rachel who had always left that up to Cassie - nailed a birdhouse underneath her window and checked out a stack of books from the library on hawks. The days she stayed home from school, pale-faced with bags underneath her eyes, bags that shouldn’t have belonged on a teenager. The house collapsing, the incident with the crocodile exhibit, Rachel’s uncharacteristic interest in George Edelman, Rachel’s reaction to everything with Saddler, the late nights - it was all so obvious, after the fact. Painfully obvious.
