Summary
Every companion’s room disappeared the moment that they left the TARDIS, save Rose’s.
The Doctor has been keeping it around as a sort of memorial. A ghost of a girl that had radically knocked his life off of its path, reminding him of the worth of cowardice and kindness, and then drove them both down the path towards their own destruction as they made each other more self-destructive than ever.
The TARDIS went to erase it after Donna got into the TARDIS, at the possibility of a new companion, but it didn’t work out, because the Doctor clung with bitter, aching, bleeding fingertips to that room. To the life that had once lived in it, no matter how impossible it would be for Rose to return.
But then came Dr. Martha Jones.
It is impossible to ignore the way that Rose Tyler existed as a ghost throughout their entire relationship, the echo of a girl that was gone but not dead, too much to be left behind, too much to continue.
(There is a ghost over Martha and the Doctor's relationship that makes it hard for the Doctor to see her for who she truly is, but someday, the truth just might come through.)

Jacqueline doesn't get to finish what she's saying, because in the moment between one thought and the next, Jane Sloan is leaning in and kissing her.
Jane is all youthful vigor and looking-before-you-leap normally, and that’s likely what this is, but god, her mouth is soft and a bit tacky with fading lipstick and the sour sting of a bottle of vodka, and Jacqueline wants that.
God, she wants that fire.
God, she wants the energy of someone willing to burn the candle at both ends, because maybe if there’s a fire going, you’ll have a big enough spark for a firework bright enough to light up the entire sky.
(As Jacqueline's life crumbles around her, Jane Sloan shows up to give her a copy of the magazine that was to be her magnum opus- and perhaps a chance at a restart in more than one way.)

Kurt Hummel deserves better than this. Kurt Hummel deserves a world that didn’t expect him to settle, because he was too much and he needed to make himself too little.
Well, fuck that. Kurt Hummel would rather be too much than too little. He would rather burn out on his own terms, a goddamn firework, than be burnt up by someone else's consuming fire.
And when he’s done, he’s breathing hard. He’s shaking. He’s trembling, because he's free, because he's himself, and himself might be burned and bruised but it is his.
This is the school that was ripped from him. This is the life that should have been his, if he hadn’t let Blaine take that starring role away from him-
“You do know, Mr. Hummel,” comes a familiar voice from a dream, “That if you’d performed like that, I would have had no choice but to overlook your anemic record and let you in.”

God, Series Operators. As bright a rainbow as any Ranger team that came before them-
Well, except, save for a Pink Ranger.
Dr. K’s records of previous teams imply that the pink on a Ranger team is usually the heart of the team.
But it cannot be argued that the team does not have a heart.
It changes, based on the day, who the heart of the team might be. Whether it might be Summer, who traded all of her luxury for a job getting her nails dirty. Whether it might be Flynn, who dedicated his entire life to flitting from job to job in some attempt to help the most people. Whether it be Scott, who cares about making sure that no one else has to suffer the loss that he has had to.
Or, more lately, if it might be Dillon, who might have some Venjix parts inside of him, sure, but who manages the battle against the end of the world everyday within his own veins for the sake of protecting others.
Some might have expected it to be the Green Ranger, whoever might fill those shoes.
But no one expected it to be Ziggy fucking Grover.

But before Jaskier has the chance to finish his statement, Yennefer’s hand is sneaking beneath his tunic and yanking it up, undoing the buttons on his doublet with a flick of the finger-
And revealing bruises painted across his torso with far less precision than artists in Oxenfurt wield their brushes. The difference between villagers and their fears of the unknown and how they stain across every stranger they meet and those taught art by the best teachers in the land, Jaskier supposes.
Yennefer’s expression snaps from smirk to scowl instantly, just as quickly as Geralt rises to his feet, going to his bag. “Who did this to you?”
(When some villagers accompany their coin with a lesson for bards who associate themselves with Witchers, Jaskier is ready to tuck himself away from the temptation of touch from a Witcher and a sorceress he is sure don't care about him.
Said sorceress and Witcher might have something to say about that.)

Susan lays down on her own bed, curls laid across the satin pillowcase beneath her, listening to the symphony that is the cars outside of their house, scraped together between three salaries and a whole lot of grit.
She was an archer. She was a queen. She was a diplomat, and a wife, and a reckless warrior who never thought that she could ever lose anything the same way that she lost that first battle, where Edmund nearly bled out between and her and Peter’s hands-
And right now, she is laying out on her bed after a night out at the bar, the taste of lipstick and perfume tacky against her mouth, a drag queen’s kiss still warm against her lips, the scratch of stubble on the inside of her thighs.
Susan can hear the shower running. She can smell the bread in the oven.
She is not the same wide-eyed faithful as she once was, who wore velvet and silk like a second skin and commanded armies with a bow and flirted with foreign princes for a chance at fulfilling her oath.
Right now, her callouses are gone. Her scars wiped away.
And she cannot go home.
So instead, she chooses to do something different.
To always feel incredibly out of place in her own skin.

After they defeat that creature and get the news that Will has been found and is in the hospital, they just fucking…collapse.
Right there, on Jonathan Byers’ bed.
Jonathan is exhausted after trying to find Will.
Nancy is exhausted after trying to find Barb.
And Steve is just tired.
There are matching scars on Jonathan and Nancy’s palms. Steve’s nose is busted up by the very boy who just grabbed him and saved him from a monster- after which, Steve saved him in return. Nancy's bat is loosely dangling from Steve's fingers.
And the three of them collapse, falling into each other, curling around each others’ aching bodies in Jonathan Byers’ cramped bed in the house with the peeling wallpaper and the burn scars on the carpet and the frantic alphabet scrawled on the wall in an attempt to communicate with a boy who couldn’t become a ghost.
They don't even have the energy to shower. To wash off the blood and the smell of smoke from burning hell-fire creatures.
They just fall into each other, the weight of gravity too hard to fight.

Hermann doesn’t need a seam ripper. He needs sutures, and scar tissue, and-
“The precursors broke me up with my boyfriend,” Newt says, and then he swallows and corrects himself, because that’s not quite right, because they used his mouth to do it. They used his mouth, and made his ears listen as Hermann broke down and pled for answers over the phone, actually begging, and yet Newt refused to give them to him, because the precursors wanted to break Newt and this was the answer. This had always been the only answer to shatter Newt Geizler- taking away Hermann Gottlieb and shattering them both. “No, scratch that- they made me break up with my boyfriend.”
And across the table, Hermann’s pen drops against the table, fingers going slack.
(Ten years ago, right as Newt and Hermann were finally trying out a relationship, the precursors made Newt break up with Hermann.
Now, Newt is free of the precursors' influence thanks to a rather painful kiss, and he has to pick up the pieces.)

Once, Wylan made Jesper swear not to let Alby Rollins suffer because of who his father was, in the way that you speak when you know what it’s like to suffer the agonies at hand.
At the time, Jesper had thought that maybe Wylan’s father was some Barrel thug, the sort of job that invited in members of other gangs to come and beat up your family.
Hell, if Jesper had learned about an hour ago that Wylan’s father was Jan Van Eck, then he might have assumed that Jan Van Eck’s enemies had once punished his son.
But Wylan spoke of Jan Van Eck’s goons shoving someone into the canal, and Jesper knows how Wylan feels about the water.
It cracks something open inside of Jesper to realize that Wylan didn’t trust him with the truth. That mayhaps Wylan’s trust wasn’t worth its weight in gold, but rather a higher price entirely, one that Jesper Fahey couldn't pay.
But he has to take heart that the first thing that Wylan said, the moment that Kaz mentioned Van Eck, was a warning for their safety.
“Wylan Van Eck?” Jesper asks.
(When Kaz announces the Ice Court Heist, the truth comes out, or: Jesper Fahey is more clever than people give him credit for and puts the pieces together himself.)

For a moment, Chase almost lets himself picture it: a vacation with Kaz, to somewhere that he could explore to his heart’s content. Costa Rica or Cordoba, Tam Đảo or Taiwan.
But Chase can’t afford any of that.
Because the last time that he indulged a dream like this, everything fell to shit, and maybe if Spike had taken over, everything with Sebastian and Crane never would have happened, Chase’s heart breaking to pieces because he was stupid enough to let a cute boy get to his heart.
“We have a mission to execute here,” Chase says, "We can't get distracted by vacations-"
But Kaz doesn't flinch. “You deserve to be a person of your own," Kaz says, because he's more stubborn than the superheroes that he worked on, "Not what other people program into you. So just one day, if that makes you feel better. Lemme give you just one day."
(The times when Spike came out and no one blinked vs. the one time that Kaz finally saw that something was wrong, or: the times that Chase Davenport nearly ran away from home and the one time he realized that he had something to stay for.)

Summary
Two of the kingdom's dragonriders are at Driftmark. Another drowns himself in ale and whores.
And the last- they say she sails above the sea to Dragonstone and then beyond, a girl clinging to her back.
No one would recognize the dragonrider, what with her silver locks tucked beneath a boy's cap and her gowns left far, far behind.
The dragonrider herself is dressed in the clothing that was laid out on her bed, the servant's clothes that were left to tempt her to leave the Red Keep behind and finally take her uncle as the lover- and eventual husband- that he had sought all along.
Her uncle's gift has been used to get her closer to a lover, yes- just mayhaps not the one intended.
There will be legends, on this night, about the Queen who seduced the Princess, about the Wayward Princess who cemented herself in Targaryen history beyond the pale of even Saera Targaryen herself, because for all her scandal, Saera didn’t take a dragon with her when she left.
(Alicent comes to Rhaenyra in the middle of the night to ask for forgiveness and for death, but regardless of their differences, Rhaenyra is not ready to let her former best friend become a ghost- unless they do it together.)

The only way to let go is to make sure that the thing you are holding onto no longer lingers.
The only way to let go is by killing the part of yourself that clings onto the past. The part of you that sees ghosts everywhere you walk, the part of you that nearly destroyed yourself with alcohol and psuedo-retirement and the itch to do something, anything, to feel alive again.
So the gun goes off.
So the curtain closes.
So the story ends, and the hero walks off the stage, because this is the one way to let go. The one way to move on.

Owen wakes up on an American suburban sofa, posters of Elvis and photos of a young Curt Mega and an itty bitty brunette woman framed and hanging around the mantlepiece, a gun-shot shoulder bandaged up and propped up by a couple of frilly, crocheted pillows, all pastels and suburban-mother-crafted.
Owen’s in pain, but that’s normal. His nerves were crushed and shredded and sewn back together ages ago. He doesn’t remember what it’s like to not be in pain.
As a matter of fact, it’s the most familiar thing about this entire place.
Because it is certainly a strange thing to find Curt Mega sitting next to him.

Okay, so maybe they live in Colorado, and he can't watch the sea, but he can watch every pirate movie and travel documentary that there is, one a night, making them stretch into forever until Troy returns.
There is something strangely soothing in waiting for Troy to return like Penelope waiting for Odysseus, except Abed has no tree-rooted bed, just a set of half-empty bunk beds and a dreamatorium that hasn't fired properly since Troy left and a gaping hole in his heart that he is having to bail out before it sinks beneath the waves like a capsizing lifeboat, a sinking ship-
(When Troy is gone, Abed watches the sea for him- i.e. watches all of the boat-based movies he can get his hands on in order to make sure that Troy returns safely. But as time goes on and it becomes clear that something has gone very wrong with his sea journey, even that might not work.
The question then becomes: is Troy actually going to come back?)

He really likes Michael Mell, fucking loves him, wants to kiss him, wants to touch him, wants to be touched by him-
And Jeremy drove himself into the ground to get away from that fact. To convince himself that what he felt for Michael wasn’t a crush.
And he nearly lost the one person who has ever liked him- the one person that he really liked- in process.
(Post-Squip, Jeremy Heere is having a hard time adjusting to his own body and wants, especially when it comes to figuring out his relationship with his best friend that he's confessed he's in love with- the same friend that he abandoned for normalcy.
But if he can figure out how to talk to Michael, he might find that normal is highly overrated.)

Sure, they’ve made it past this investigation, they’ve made it past the burning down of Annalise's house, they've made it into a place where there isn't an active police investigation directly around them, and that should be giving Connor room to breathe-
But everything that Connor has ever worked to has crumpled around him. His grades are in the toilet. He sees ghosts in every corner.
He sees them in the goddamn mirror.
It’s impossible not to.
He sees Paxton, hanging onto that windowsill, pitching himself over the edge because holding on took more strength than letting go.
And Paxton had far less weight settling across his shoulders. Paxton didn’t have multiple murders branded in the back of his mind.
And so in the middle of the night, Connor turns over on his side, looks Oliver in the eyes, and says, “If I don’t leave it’s gonna fucking kill me.”

But they’ve already done six impossible things this week. Solved a dozen impossible, supernatural crimes.
It is hard not to be compelled by the faith in Billy’s voice. The stubborn, sharp edge that is willing to bash through anything that it has to, if it means that the people he loves are safe.
By the word "our."
But then Billy swallows, uncertainty entering his expression for the first time. “But we don't know if he'd be willing to trade a crown for us,” he says, something raw in his voice.
“He already traded his freedom for you,” Bea points out, “It'll take some work to get him out-” Some is definitely an understatement, she knows that, but she has to believe that there is a chance, because she knows that hope is a terrible, rough-edged creature, but it is still a living one that can become theirs. “But what's one more case?” Bea asks, and there is more life in her voice than she has felt in ages.
And Billy grins, something sharp as shrapnel in his smile.
