Now she knows, because every time she hears the water drain from Gorgug’s room, the walls of hers start to close in.

If he’d had any sort of wits to gather when the first grub squirmed across his feet, he would have torn off a piece of his clothing and tied it tightly around his face in an impenetrable mask. Now, though, he doesn’t dare move his hands away from his face, paralyzed by the feeling of everything all over his skin.
The bugs are everywhere. In his hair, between his fingers, on the back of his neck. They’re under his clothes. Fabian just grits his teeth and keeps his mouth and eye squeezed shut.

Sklonda knows her son better than that.
It’s casual and normal, the way she lightly catches his wrist as he drops a heavy file folder on the table and turns away to scurry off. Riz, at least, has the decency to look moderately ashamed.
“No hug?” Sklonda asks with a raised eyebrow. “No coffee? No snooping around my office? I’d think my own son hates me.”
That’s about when she realizes that something is off.
