Work Text:

Wind and Snow

I can hear the wind
Blowing strongly in the night,
Bringing heavy snow.

Apocalypse

The bombs have gone off.
There is no escape at all.
Humankind is screwed.

The Anvil Dropper

Pressing a button,
Causing an anvil to fall
And crush a person.

Selecting Hymns

Selecting the hymns
That I am going to play
Is not so easy.

Refined

A refined fellow
Will always make sure that he
Looks his very best.

Neighbourhood

Waving a friendly
Hello to the different folks
Who live around me.

Chirping

Although it’s winter,
The birds still sit in the trees
And make their noises.

Birthday Surprise

Planning something for
Our mother’s special birthday.
Shh! It’s a secret.

Day Reading

Reading a book while
Instrumental music plays,
Something I enjoy.

Red Rose

Shade of deep crimson
In a blossom of petals,
Elegant beauty.

Date Night

Going on a date.
I sure hope that it goes well.
Do not mess things up.

Bridge

Spanning the waters,
Letting cars and people cross,
Connecting the lands.

Friday the Thirteenth

Friday the thirteenth,
Often associated
With superstition.

Valentine

Getting a special
Gift for the one that you love,
Sign of affection.

Masked and Gloved

Putting on his gloves
While a medical mask is
Covering his face.

Duty

Doing my job which
Involves the execution
Of prisoner scum.

Classy Look

Neckties and bow ties
Add a bit of classiness
To a guy’s image.

Ashes

Ashes to ashes
And to dust you shall return.
Memento mori.

Dapper Dentistry

The dapper dentist
Likes to wear tuxedos and
Fancy suits to work.

Looking Good

A red silk dress shirt
With a black tie and waistcoat,
Both classy and cool.

Obscured

The snow is piled high.
I cannot see around it.
A car is coming.

Irreparable

The damage is done.
Things will never be the same
From this point in time.

White Out

The snow is blowing.
Stay off the roads if you can.
Limited vision

Head Cold

My voice is groggy
And I am blowing my nose
Very frequently.

Shovelling Snow

Shovelling the snow,
Making huge piles of the stuff,
Clearing the driveway.

Rising Sun

The sky lights up as
The bright sun comes into view.
The night fades away.

Ocean

Spanning the whole world.
Filled with numerous life forms.
Incredible depths.

Alien

A being from space
Arriving on the planet.
Is it friend or foe?

Notes:

The Haiku Writing Month group on DeviantArt seems to be dead for good (unless someone decides to revive it next year, but I doubt it). However, even with it gone, I still want to challenge myself every February with writing haiku for the month. I managed to successfully complete 28 haiku by the end of the month again.

The haiku 'Apocalypse', 'Neighbourhood', 'Date Night', 'Irreparable', and 'Rising Sun' were all inspired by prompts for a poetry group. 'Date Night' also got me a Daily Deviation on DeviantArt (which surprised me that a little thing like that would get one). 'Head Cold' was inspired by a cold that I was dealing with while 'Obscured' is based on an event that happened while I was driving. 'Friday the Thirteenth' was inspired by the fact that February 13th fell on a Friday this year.

I noticed I wrote more haiku about dressing in a stylish and classy manner this year. I guess it's a subject that's easy to obtain inspiration from, especially as it gets harder and harder to write different haiku the more I do it.
