    Summary

As Nie Huaisang poured their tea, Jiang Cheng rubbed his thumb against the carved wooden box in his lap and tried not to fret over what the other man was thinking. He knew what he looked like: the white streak at his temple announced it all. Jiang Cheng's cultivation was failing, and with the discussion conference tomorrow, it would be impossible to hide. Not even the reputation of Sandu Shengshou could shield him from being known now.

"Jiang-xiong, if you brought me a present, you have to give it to me," Nie Huaisang said behind his fan. His eyes seemed amused, at least, maybe.

"This is why tea is supposed to be drunk first," Jiang Cheng said peevishly. "The entire pot is cold now."

    Iris==small. Seth bring Iris closer.

It wasn't the reaction Seth had expected, although in retrospect maybe he should have. Iris wasn't just a new person, but a new concept. It was natural that the AIs would find her novel.

Getting Iris loose was only slightly less involved than getting her strapped in had been. Aphelion and Perihelion obviously couldn't interfere, but they offered a running commentary, which Seth read over Martyn's shoulder. (Iris==stuck. Free Iris.)

    Summary

They are boarding now, as I stand some kind of guard before the door. The last of them climbs up into the vessel, and the counter that is consuming my mind ticks up. Eighty-seven. Eighty-nine.

Then I hear something new. Not only new words, but a new tone, a new feeling in the feed. This message is only to me.

«You got them out,» it says.

And then, «Your work is acknowledged.»

I want to cry. I want to rip something apart with my teeth – I want to scream loud enough to bring the habitat down. I want to cry. But I can't.

So instead I tap it back in the feed. «Negative. Your work is acknowledged.»

    Bookmarker's Notes

It’s impossible, the amount of affection Dick feels for this kid. It’s a bomb going off inside of him. An earthquake. Something cataclysmic. He’s loved a lot of people in his life, but never in this shape.

    Summary

“What are you doing here?” Damian demands once he’s let go, disgruntled fingers combing out the pressed part of his hair. “I wasn’t expecting you until Saturday.”

Dick hums, smile idling. “I wanted to see you.”

Dick picks Damian up from school, and they pass by a murder on the way home. Surprisingly, this isn't the most stressful part of their commute.

“I am beginning to understand something. Or perhaps I have finally understood something.”

“Do I get to hear about it?”

    “You do. You must.”

Distantly, he hears a warning bell—an old instinct whispers to him to brace for impact, and nothing ever hits quite as hard as his family.

“Alright,” he agrees, betraying none of this. “So hit me.”

    Damian breathes in. Damian says:

    “You will not stay.”
