“I couldn’t just out him,” Troy said. “Also you weren’t my boyfriend yet. And I had a lot going on, okay?”
Harris stared.
“And he sort of told me about…?” Troy said, gesturing at the phone. “I mean, I sort of asked, and he didn’t say that it wasn’t, uh, happening. I don’t know. I guess I forgot about it.”
Harris flopped backward on the bed, both hands over his face.
“How,” he said. “Did you forget.”

"You have a light?"
David Hollander looks up from rummaging in his hockey bag and sees the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on with an unlit cigarette between her fingers. Her long black hair is tied up in a ponytail but her bangs frame her face, which is golden tan against her white turtleneck. She arches an eyebrow after a moment and he realizes he's been staring with his mouth hanging open. "I… no, sorry. I don't smoke."
"Ugh. Athletes," she sighs, putting her cigarette back into the pack. She leans back against the brick, her breath visible in the cold air. She surveys him with eyes the colour of coffee and he has never been more awake in his life. "You're Hollander, right? Left winger?"
"That's me, yeah. You a big hockey fan?"
"The biggest." Her mouth curves up into a smile. David feels like he's been jolted into the boards.

“I do love you, you fucking weirdo,” Shane says. He pulls back in time to see Ilya’s lip quiver a little, and he blinks, alarmed. “What? Are you okay?”
“Yes,” Ilya says immediately, and he swallows and looks down, almost like he’s nervous. “Shanya, I love you so much it feels like it must always have been true. That I have loved you my whole life.”
He says the words with such solemnity, slow and perfect. He never calls Shane Shanya unless he’s feeling particularly tender, vulnerable, broken open. It is a name saved for the very good days and also the very bad ones. For a moment, Shane’s brain stalls out, hunting through his mental calendar. It’s not their anniversary…
“Sometimes I feel that way too,” he says gently. “You’ve always been… I don’t know. I don’t know who I am without you being such a big part of things. Since the start.”
“Most of our lives,” Ilya says, and his smile widens into a proper grin. “I made calendar reminder to tell me. It went off this morning when you were in the shower. Today is the day.”
