Summary
When nuclear fire consumed the world, much of the Defense Intelligence Agency was wiped out. Those who survived did so in top-secret bunkers and facilities, deep underground and hidden from the outside world. Over time, these last remnants would venture out into the wastes, slowly dying off one by one from violence or disease or age, until the DIA was no more. Eventually, the secrets of the old world would fade into obscurity, forgotten and never to be remembered.
Well. Forgotten by all but one.
AKA the story of a pre-war cyborg in an unfamiliar post-war wasteland.

Summary
"I've decided I don't do long-term. It's not a thing I'm built for."
"Why not?"
"Because the people who do long-term need someone who can do... more emotional labor than I can sustain. Reliably. I'm not going to pretend to be what I'm not, long-term."
"What if someone didn't need the labor? What if someone was... similarly constituted. In some ways. And didn't need the performance?"

Sameen Shaw doesn't connect with people unless it's out of necessity or because she has no choice. The social interactions that she does choose don't go much further than small talk and one-night stands. Then, she meets Root and has to reassess what she thought she knew about herself.

Summary
For approximately one second, Root had a very clear view of the carpet rushing toward her face. And then she didn't, because something stopped her.
Her face ended up against something solid and warm, and when she finally got her bearings enough to lift her head, she found herself looking up at a face she'd never seen before.
A very good face, as it happened.

Root is an Actor, and when she trips on her own dress at the Golden Globes and nearly breaks her face in front of essentially every Papperazzi in LA, Sameen Shaw, a Security Guard from a private firm that was hired to work the event, catches her. Let's just say the Sapphic internet goes a little insane.
