Summary
“Well, the rest of it should be pretty simple. Just duct tape and aluminum foil.” Dr. Grace smiles, a little lopsided. His glasses have slipped farther down his nose. “Maybe some safety glasses.”
“I’m sure we can arrange that.” Carl’s a little breathless, and Dr. Grace smiles wider.
Carl wants to make him happy, he realizes. Wants to see him smile and pump his fist in the air again after some new discovery. For the project, he tells himself. Just because he’ll make progress on the project.
They glance at each other, and Dr. Grace’s cheeks flush, but he doesn’t look away. He doesn’t look away, and Carl’s heart lifts, and for fifteen minutes they’re on top of the world. They buy safety glasses and throw bags and bags of sour skittles in their cart and on the drive back to the hangar, Carl feels more hopeful than he has in a long time.
(He knows it’s worthless. He knows it’s a bad impulse, that this will just lead to even more pain, just like everyone else who’s joined and left the project at the drop of a hat. He does it anyway.)

Martin recognized Cosmo immediately.
Even after twenty-something years, even after Martin had changed his name and Cosmo had supposedly died in prison, he’d recognize him anywhere. Sometimes, late at night, he would wonder if Cosmo knew Martin better than Martin even knew himself, and he’d mourn the possibility of it, the fact that Cosmo was gone–
But now he’s right here, in front of him, in this office in the middle of nowhere, the light from the aquarium casting a pale glow on his face, his hair sleeked back and his smile still a little crooked, dressed in a suit rather than their old band t-shirts but it’s him, it’s really him, and Martin’s breath catches in his throat and his vision blurs a little and he has to blink the tears out of his eyes to confirm that it’s real.
“Hello, Marty,” Cosmo says, and it cuts straight to the bone.

"Is there something wrong?” It comes out sharper than he means it to. He forces himself to lessen his grip on his chopsticks as he picks at his noodles. Stratt’s perched on the table, forcing him to look up at her, craning his neck while the lights shine down like a halo.
“Well, the sun is dying,” she says, and they both know it’s not what he asked. Grace’s noodles keep falling apart when he tries to fish them out with his chopsticks and eat.“I know that. I mean–” he has to swallow, unexpected emotions welling up, that familiar old feeling from his teenage years, his twenties, every time someone called him the wrong thing or looked at him out of the corners of their eyes with that fear, or disgust, or worse, pity. “Is there something wrong with me?”
“There’s nothing wrong with you.” Normally he would appreciate the straightforwardness, but today everything is grating on his nerves.
“You’ve been looking at me weird all day.” He stabs at the noodles again with his chopsticks. No luck.
“Grace, do you want surgery?”
Oh.
