Summary
Illi McMillin hates Vermont as a whole, but she especially hates the stupidly small town she's been forced to move to because of Milli's asthma treatments. Glenn Fell is not a forgiving place as it is, and it's especially unforgiving for a trans woman with severely stunted social skills and barely any hope to begin with. Already a target for bullying on her first day of senior year at Glenn Fell High School, Illi decides to hide away and collect her thoughts in the woods on the outskirts of town.
It's in those woods that she meets Warren Pencey.
Sure, there's immediate chemistry between them, but Illi can't help noticing some weird things about her new best friend. He always stays behind in the woods when she leaves at night. She's never seen him during the school day, no matter how hard she searches for him, even though he swears he's a senior at the same high school as her. Sometimes she's even sure the sunlight passes through his shoulders when he's standing directly in front of it. The weirdest part, though?
Illi's other friend, Ray, says Warren went missing four years ago.

Illi McMillin is a kickass teenage girl. She has the best fashion sense, has learned to do her makeup really well (after lots of practice), and is the funniest person alive. However, she hasn't found the courage to come out to her friends. Or really leave her house at all. Her brother is starting to worry about her. But fuck that. She does have friends, so its not like she's a complete recluse. Everyone says highschool is a pivotal time in your life, when your mind and body change. But nothing is gonna change for Illi. Her friends' growing concern for her, and her growing concern over her feelings for a certain friend mean absolutely nothing. She's got her sketchbook and already incredibly low expectations, so how bad can junior year really be!!

Illi had become somewhat obsessed with the new kid in her English class, as Mikey had said. But she usually chose against listening to anything Mikey had to say because he had also claimed that Illi was “obsessed” with her friend Ray Toro back before he moved, which she definitely wasn't. She was just curious about Frank; she thought he was interesting. She thought his piercings were especially interesting, the way the light from the window reflected off the silver metal as the sun rose during English. She thought his hair was interesting, too. The way it looked like he only cared enough to style the front so that it curled and framed his face. She thought the way he wore his uniform was interesting. He never wore his tie right; it was always a bit too loose, and his shirt was rarely buttoned all the way, which let her see the tattoo on his neck. She thought his tattoo was interesting, and she was curious how a 16-year-old was allowed to get one, or if he did it himself behind his parents' backs. She was curious if he had any more. Like she said, she wasn't obsessed, she just thought he was interesting.
