“Just one more question, Mr. Rozanov.”

“How were you able to stay focused tonight after learning of your father's passing?”

Ilya stood frozen, eyes glued to the camera. Jaw locked. On the screen, his chest barely moved, each breath turning dangerously shallow.

Shane didn't realize what he was doing until he was already shoving the heavy conference room doors open.

Or: Ilya Rozanov learns of his father's death during a live press conference and has a panic attack. Shane goes to him. In front of everyone.

“Rozanov,” Crowell begins, his voice finally dropping its casual flair. He snorts out something like a laugh. “Is Hollander blackmailing you?”

“What?” Shane says to his muted phone at the same time Ilya says “Excuse me?”

“A charity really?” Crowell huffs like this was a joke. Shane feels his blood go cold as he realizes this isn’t a friendly little meeting.
Crowell lets out a soft hum, and Shane can hear his chair creek like he’s leaning forward. “Ilya level with me, you’re a bad person.”

    No. No! No!

or: 4 times Ilya is faced with his persona as a bad person and believes it and Shane does not + 1 time Shane makes sure nobody misjudges Ilya again.

STILL SIMPLY THE BEST? ROZANOV’S ABSENCE RAISES QUESTIONS FOR OTTAWA

By morning, the headline is everywhere.

Ilya has announced he'll be out for the season and every theory under the sun has come up: injury, contract drama, attitude problems.

Somehow, I wish any of those were true. It would be better than the truth.

Instead, I am sitting in a locker room, 112 miles away from him, wondering how we are going to survive this - or worse, if he will.

Or: Ilya gets diagnosed with cancer, shifting their lives off axis.

This is not a fic about sickness so much as the life that gathers around it: the ugly parts, the funny parts, the people who stay, and the terrifying, ordinary miracle of still having something to love. This is about holding onto the best, even through the worst.

    Shane.

The only person who makes every scary moment better.

Another bang. A crack. A weird huff of air sensation, feeling like something was blowing out. The plane, Ilya thought, dropping slowly, uncontrollably, falling out of the sky.

“What the fuck?” The familiar voice of Wyatt Hayes, coming from the row in front of Ilya, tinges of fear and confusion. “Are we falling out of the fucking sky?”

OR, the centaurs’ plane does crash.

    Summary

“This is a stupid dream,” Shane mutters, scrunching his eyes closed even harder to let in less light. “Why are you here?”

Rozanov hesitated, almost sounding startled when he spoke. “Is not a dream. I am here because I love you.”

Shane’s eyes do snap open at that. He can’t focus on Rozanov either, but he tries really hard. “What the fuck?” They did not have THAT kind of relationship. In fact, the last time he’d seen Rozanov, the man had fucked him silly then practically kicked him out of his hotel room without so much as a thank you or a kiss.

What the fuck was this love shit?

The man’s shoulders slump and he sits back in his chair. “Oh, Shane.” He sounds so disappointed. “The doctor said—I thought when you woke up again—”

    **

They say most accidents happen at home. Shane has a catastrophic one in his parents' garage and loses 9 years of his memories. The last thing he can fully remember being in the elevator and almost sending several text messages after an evening with Rozanov in a hotel suite. All Shane knows is that Rozanov and his parents are in one place, and that's his biggest nightmare.
