    Bookmarker's Notes

Surprisingly character-focused AU rewrite of main Bleach storyline. Swings from comedy to sincere pathos with great verve and generally pulls off both.

    Summary

"The crown suits you, you know," said Ser Duncan over the cacophony, bringing Baelor back to himself. "Makes you look... you know. Kingly. Which I suppose makes sense, seeing as how you're the king now." A look of anguish crossed his face. "Oh, hells, I shouldn't be calling you 'you,' should I? It's 'Your Grace.' Please don't take—"

Baelor resisted the urge to rest his hand against the lad's back, as one might soothe a skittish horse. "No offense was taken, ser."

"Thank you," Ser Duncan said, then immediately amended, "thank Your Grace...ness. Seven fucks, I'm getting another drink." And he whirled away into the throng before Baelor could say a word.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Baelor PoV: light on the pining, heavy on the Targaryen family complications and the inescapable knotting of the political and personal in a feudal society. As happy as a family can be under the circumstances (and with judicial application of magic that likely is not very canon-supported).

"Certainly," Aemon said, rising to his feet alongside his brothers. Daella, her eyes alight with curiosity, followed them out as they began arguing with each other before they were halfway across the room. In the silence following the slamming of the door, Baelor felt his headache burst upon the back of his skull like a bruise.

Beside him, Kiera — her plate clean — patted him on the shoulder. "Did you know that Daella and Egg and Rhae used to call you—"

"Yes, I've been made aware," he said, resisting the urge to rub at his neck. It would not help him, but there was a sort of comfort in the gesture.

The door opened again and Maekar came in, looking even more cross than usual. "What the fuck are my children doing all clustered together in the hallway and saying 'nothing' when I ask what they're doing?"
