So did Mama. And her wife. The beautiful woman whom Rafael gets to see on Mama's phone more often than not.
He wishes she would come back to them. He didn't get to see her for long enough, that he could touch her long hair as much as he wanted, look at her bright, extraordinary eyes and feel as warm as he needed. He wants his other Mama to come back.
Mama came out of the meeting looking the least bit exhausted, a little bit worried, and a whole lot genuinely horrified when Max had seen her and taken off running without his shoes in her direction, tracking clay over the blue tennis court and some into the green before Mama caught him.
Grandmama had picked Max up and shushed him while hiding a smile, and Mama had gone inside and come back out with a broom to quietly sweep away the clay, with a forced smile plastered on her face.
