    He looks up and sees an enormous electronic billboard mounted on the side of a glittering new building, LED light flashing out into the hazy afternoon. There’s a young man’s face smiling down at him, his eyes round and crinkled with joy, his teeth white. The video footage is slowed, wind blowing through his mop of dark hair as a CGI background ripples behind him. I’m going for gold! reads the line of text beside him; beneath it is printed Wei Ying – Archery.

    It's… preposterous, how handsome he is. How much he looks like he belongs there, up on the screen above the city’s most fabulous shopping arcade. More like an idol, a high-paid talent, than an athlete.

    Wei Wuxian grits his teeth, knowing he has no other choice. Not if it means Lan Zhan’s life. Besides, the Cloud Recesses has the best library and a long history of dealing with curses. It’s the most logical choice, even if he’d like to punch logic in the face right now.

    “Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan asks.

    He gives him a grim smile. “Looks like you’re finally getting your wish, Lan Zhan.”

    Lan Zhan stares back at him, expression blank.

    “I’m coming to Gusu with you.”

     

    Or: Lan Wangji gets hit with a curse that requires Wei Wuxian to stay in close proximity at all times. Everything only gets more complicated from there.

    The mist pulls together in front of him, swirling together into a tall column. A woman steps out of it. She is tall—taller than Lan Wangji, probably, though it is hard to tell from his seated position. Her skin is unnaturally pink, glowing like coals. Long, black hair swings down her back to her knees as she rushes forward, snatching Lan Wangji’s hand and examining it. “Who bites themself? What are you, a dog with fleas?”
    There are two ebony black ram’s horns curling out of the woman’s head, gleaming as the light of her skin catches on the ridges. She lifts her eyes to Lan Wangji’s after she has finished examining the bite mark, a red so deep that they are almost black.
    So his initial instincts had been correct. Lan Wangji just manages not to sigh.
    “Wei Ying.”
