At night, he would close his eyes, and his father's crown would appear before him. Finwë's crown it had been, reshaped after his death and redecorated with blue gemstones that stared now at Fingon, empty-gazed—dead eyes of dead kings. The red gems, plucked from Fëanor's crown by Maedhros's order and inlaid in Fingolfin's as a sign of unity, seemed darker to Fingon, heavier. He thought he could see something lurking in their scarlet depths. In his dreams, Fingon's hand unwillingly rose to touch the crown, and the blue stones suddenly blinked, and the red stones burst and covered him with blood.
After the Dagor Bragollach, Fingon inherits his father's crown.

Maedhros, as Fëanor's only daughter, is in quite the precarious position. She desires vengeance while her people are divided in two camps on the brink of war. Her father stripped her of all the power she had in their family except for one: she could choose her husband, so long as she chose him with her mind rather than her heart. Luckily for her, her heart and mind are in agreement. All she has to do is convince the man she loves, his father, and her brother that this marriage will prove beneficial to all parties. All the while, she weaves.

There are certain strains the songs always reach for yet never acknowledge. The Sindar are perpetually rooted: the trees know their king, the river comes when called, the girdle grows from the forest instead of enclosing the same. Ironically, the Noldor in exile are granted a similar ancestral fluency in mythic proportions, even by the scribes accused of being their greatest detractors. Finrod’s delving of Nargothrond is a harmonious communion with stone; the mallorn takes to Lothlórien like a native son returned. Whatever it is that the Eldar do to the landscape, the songs will declare it kinship. No such word exists for the rest of us. And so nobody knows why the line of Ulfang once chose the Foe, and kept choosing so.
________In Third Age Gondor, a spy from Rhún writes an account of the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, chronicling the treachery of Ulfang’s host against the Union of Maedhros as he follows the historical trail of a posthumous epithet: the simple prefix ul, the Sindarin word for unsightly.

When he was dropped to the deck, Mairon forced every inch of his body into begging for mercy. He kept his head down, unable to shake the fury even as he approximated gasping, pitiful sobs. Strands of his hair slicked to his face, sending saltwater running down his cheeks; the rest of it was simply additional foreign weight squishing against his sodden casing of wool and silk.
As far as taking a punishment went, it was a poor showing. But this was something far worse than punishment: entertainment.
