Summary
A missing scene story from Episode 31, when Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou go to gather tree branches.
He thwacked the branch against Zhao Yuanzhou again, feeling childish and wildly freer than he had in years. Cypress needles scattered into the air. The sharp swats echoed off chamber walls grown thick with silence and sorrow.
Zhao Yuanzhou repeated the word again, “Fall,” but with a different target. Zhuo Yichen felt the swoop in his knees and dropped before he remembered he could resist the command, Zhao Yuanzhou had given him the power to resist. It must be, then, that he didn’t want to.

Summary
Zhuo Yichen has been having strange dreams ever since Ran Yi’s protection disappeared.
Perhaps it’s not fair to call them strange. All dreams are strange to him, now; he’s not sure what’s normal anymore. His brother is there, yes; but so are his colleagues, his enemies, random passerbys from his day. Who’s important enough to appear in a dream? It’s not clear to him. Sometimes he wakes with the hems of his clothes wet, as if he’s wandered; sometimes his head aches, or his heart. He wakes with tears on his cheeks. Is this normal? He has no way to tell.
He feels like he’s in a dream now, walking to Zhao Yuanzhou’s home with two jugs of wine.

When he had used his Cloud Light sword all those decades, or perhaps centuries, -surely not Millenia- ago, he knew that his search would be long, would be difficult, could be heartbreaking. But just as he was unwilling to say goodbye to his loved ones all those years ago, he was just as unwilling, or perhaps incapable of giving up his search now.

During the day, Yichen scours the Wilderness and the human realm for any trace of Zhao Yuanzhou’s soul, habitually glancing down at Yunguang’s pommel, hoping fruitlessly that it will glow a cool, icy, heartstopping blue. He rides through most nights as well, but when his horse needs to rest, he meditates, sinking into dreams full of Xiao Jiu’s laughter, Ying Lei’s whining and Zhao Yuanzhou’s snarking commentary. When he wakes, there are tear tracks on his cheeks.

Summary
Dying was supposed to be simple—peace, quiet, an end to all the complications of existence. But of course, there was Yichen. Who else would be stubborn enough to drag Zhu Yan back into the chaos? He should be angry. Or disappointed. Or maybe even grateful. Instead, he’s preoccupied with burying inconvenient truths as deeply as possible—just like a proper Great Demon ought to.
And then there’s Wen Xiao. Radiant, clever, endlessly amused by their antics. It’s easy to lose yourself in her, isn’t it? But not even her brilliance can quiet the restless hunger gnawing at the edges.
This is a story about how even millennia don’t make you any smarter about your own feelings. About stubborn ex-humans breaking apart and drinking too much. About demonic sex-ed (yes, actual sex-ed), and the surprising practicality of balance as both a life skill and… other things.
Most of all, it’s about finding what you didn’t realize you’d been searching for all along—and what it costs to claim it.
The story is finished, and I’ll be posting updates a few times a week (don’t expect daily; I’m way too lazy for that). Comments, however, make me post faster. Do with that what you will.

In the end, Zhuo Yichen had laid himself out in the bedroom, where very little has also changed: not the mountains steady outside the window, nor his family’s shrine against the wall. He sits in the water of a new fishpond—legs stretched out beside him, hair spilling unbound across his shoulders, two pale horns curving up from his temples. His head rests on his arms, which rest on the stone lip of the pool.
He doesn’t look like he’s in pain. He looks as if one day he laid down and had simply gone to sleep.
