Summary
Of three things, Wolfwood is sure:
One; whatever ill-contrived afterlife he had reached, it was silent. And warm. And soft, like well-loved blankets or forest moss. A final mockery of comfort in his dire hours – though there were certainly worse ways to be teased by death, he knew.
Two; he ached in ways he had never known. Down to his bones, the fine tangle of his tissue and sinew, the soft sponge of his marrow. His skeleton rearranged and his body bled dry. Heavy and twitching, he cannot move himself.
Three; he was just as alone as before. Whatever strange place he had found himself was as desolate as it was gentle.
No, there. The sound of footsteps. The disgruntled creak of a floorboard. A door swinging wide on old hinges and the soft tune of a man humming off-key.

Summary
Continuation of "not dying, then": an aftermath of Vash's feverish choices and Nicholas D. Wolfwood's desperation.
-“How can I make it up to you?”
“If I just tell you what to do it’s not really a good apology, now, is it?”
Vash laughs—the little soft one that barely leaves his mouth, that lightly shakes his body and makes the corners of his mouth turn up just a bit too far.
“I think you like to be difficult.”
“Put in some effort, blondie.”
Wolfwood thinks his heart might stop—it’s just pounding so hard, so fast, and that can’t be good, can it? Surely Vash can see it through the thin fabric of his shirt. Surely a man as ancient as Vash the Stampede can see through him entirely.

Summary
Vash isn't well-versed in asking for what he wants. He's much better at theatrics, and half-truths, and longing glances over a fire.
Wolfwood is just doing his job.
At the end of it, they're both just making excuses.

“You’re freezin’, huh?”
The question feels loaded. It feels purposeful and damning and dangerous.
Vash leans back into the embrace against his better judgment and closes his eyes.
“Kinda,” he finally relents—voice pathetic and reedy, even to his own ears. Acquiescing to a flimsy, unbelievable out because he’s too weak to keep himself in check.
“Can’t have you dyin’ on me in the middle of the night,” Wolfwood murmurs.
Heart in his throat, Vash decides to play along. “The desert gets pretty cold at night.”

Summary
Vash isn't particularly good at communicating his needs and Wolfwood never knows what to expect from Vash the Stampede - least of all when he's glassy eyed and whining all damn day.

And from here, Wolfwood can see the other man startlingly clear: he’s bleary-eyed, gaze never really settling, eyelashes fluttering. His gaze darts and flickers and shifts. A flush has spread just beneath the high collar of his shirt—mimicking the heat visible in his face and turning his ears a precious shade to match.
“Huh,” Wolfwood starts—sets his task aside to stare at the Humanoid Typhoon in wonder where he is wilted over Wolfwood's lap. The knot of his insides tighten under that ethereal gaze, pinning him in place. “You really don’t feel well, huh?”

Summary
Father Nicholas D. Wolfwood is appointed as the new vicar of a tiny island chapel a hundred miles from his home.
He hates the sand. He hates the ocean. His only comforts have been hand rolled cigarettes from the market and his one friend, local bartender Meryl Stryfe.
But he quickly makes another.

“Can’t. Sorry. You are now legally required to call me by my first name.”
“Fortunately it’s quite a nice one.”
Oh, no. Wolfwood might be in trouble here.

Summary
“Nick.” Vash releases Wolfwood’s hand in order to cup the side of his face. Wolfwood shuts his eyes, turning his head just enough to press his lips to Vash’s palm in a soundless kiss. When he opens them again, the blood is gone, and Vash is warm beneath his hand. He meets his eyes and they’re so impossibly kind that Wolfwood could believe for a second that heaven is real and it’s here in his arms.
“You won’t hurt me,” Vash says with so much certainty, so much trust, and that has Wolfwood gasping like a drowning man, coming down and seizing Vash’s mouth in a bruising kiss.
(Or, Wolfwood learns what his hands are capable of)

It takes Vash five whole minutes to knock on the door, and as soon as it opens, one thing becomes apparently clear.
“Vash, I presume?” Nicholas asks.
“T-that’s me!” Vash manages.
Oh, Nicholas knows this is going to be fun.
