O’Neil emerged from the crowd of howling spectators, hands held palm out. “I’m here to talk. Who’s in charge?”
Finlay jumped down from the back of the chair she’d been balancing on. “That would be me.”
“Alright, here’s the deal. This?” He gestured in the general direction of the fight. “This is just getting sad. I talked it over with the team, and if you can get Malenia to back off then we’re willing to call it a draw.”
Tiche shot an apprehensive glance at Finlay. At least she seemed to be considering it.
O’Neil continued. “Somebody’s going to get killed if this keeps up. Whatever set your boss off, it’s not worth--”
“What set her off?!” Finlay drew up to her full height, nose to nose with O’Neil. “Radahn wants to say all that about Miquella, then act like we started this? Forget it!”
“What does Miquella have to do with anything?”
“Wait,” Tiche interjected, “do you really not know?” -

Cloud turns his head, looks out at the endless flat landscape, wind in his hair, and that’s as much conversation as Zack gets out of him that afternoon.
Zack isn’t surprised, exactly, that Cloud is acting like this. He watched the change, over the years: as Cloud’s softness and quiet and humor turned into desperation, as fear gave way to fury, as Cloud learned to bite and shout at their captors; and later, when Cloud stopped bothering to speak at all. When his eyes were blank and distant no matter what was happening to him, except for rare moments when he found an opening to make someone else miserable, if even for a second. -
Summary
He’d welcome it, like the light of a dying star. Like the only thing that gives his universe any meaning.

“You’ve got something special, though. Even if people don’t see it at first.” He looks over Cloud’s reflection again. “I’m a better observer than most.”
Cloud adjusts the ruffles on his skirt, self-consciously, then pulls up translucent, lacy white knee-highs over each knee. “Thanks, asshole. You suck at pep talks, by the way. They always end with you complimenting yourself.”
“Whatever, Princess. Ready to go?”
“Ready as I’ll ever be.” He looks at himself in the mirror and sighs.
Feels like a while since he remembers looking into one, and actually recognizing the person looking back. -

'The way you are,' she echoes, and looks thoughtful. 'I remember my dad said once, sometimes one person can't be their best selves in a relationship, and that it’s okay. It's okay to share the load. It's okay for one of you to hurt.' She is crying again. He is about to, too. 'I… I don't want perfect. I don't expect you to feel like you can handle this all the time.'
'I feel like I don't deserve forgiveness.' And there it is. So much fucking guilt, stacked up, so heavy, constant and aching behind his eyes as he sees Aerith die and he sees himself leaving Tifa and the kids to let himself die, and he sees his mother burning and Zack dying for him and-
She abruptly puts her hands on his face, and pulls his brow down to hers, and the spiral catches, snags. 'I can't - nobody can - ever make you believe that there is nothing to forgive. For Aerith. For leaving. For all of it. But... do you forgive me?'
The question is sudden, as is his confusion, quells some of that panic. 'You never did…'
'I lied to you, remember?' she insists. 'When we met in Midgar, I lied about who you were, because I was scared. And I was so jealous of Aerith, even up until the moment she died, of how easily she gave her love to people. To you. I've always hated myself for that, for feeling that way even after she was gone. And instead of trying harder I just let you leave again.'
They hold each other for a long moment. Her words sober him. Make him feel like he was seeing things clearly for the first time in a long time.
'I'm sorry,' he says, and he realizes that it’s the first time he’s actually asked for it. -

Summary
The crisis of Geostigma had passed. Without a more immediate threat, there was time to ruminate on the past. Shinra had committed grievous crimes. Crimes that the world was still learning the true extent of. Crimes for which no one had really, truly, ever accounted for. And they weren't the only ones. In the wake of Geostigma, Cloud, Tifa, and the rest of the team reckon with their pasts and try move forward in a world that seems determined to repeat history.
Cloud and Tifa are the central characters and pairing, but the story is told from multiple perspectives and focuses on other characters as well. Takes place around Dirge of Cerebus but diverges from that story and only loosely uses some of its plot elements.

“What I want,” Cloud said. “Is to keep Tifa safe.”
His head dropped again, his shoulders sagging.
“It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
