Recruiting had never been Arthur’s job, nor had it ever been anything he showed any interest in. The only person Arthur had ever brought back to camp had been Mary Gillis, and he had never invited her to stay. With that particular commonality in mind, Hosea studied this newcomer as he approached with Arthur.
The two of them had to pass by Hosea on their way to Dutch’s cabin and Arthur paused, his companion falling into step beside him. Up close, Hosea could see that the man’s dark skin held an even deeper shade beneath his eyes, betraying sleepless nights. His black hair was pulled back in a loose tail that stopped well past his shoulders—and, well, if Hosea were a couple decades younger, he could certainly understand why this man was the first person Arthur had brought home since introducing them all to Mary Gillis.
Or: Five times Hosea Matthews suspected something was going on between Arthur and Charles, and the one time he confirmed it.

“I can’t believe I thought this was a good idea,” Ling groans under his breath, head falling forwards slightly.
“Hey, it’s fine,” Ed tries, fisting his hands into his lap to resist the urge to reach out and tuck Ling’s bangs out of his face and rest a hand on his shoulder. Part of him hopes that Ling doesn't know how stupidly in love with him Ed is. Another part of him thinks he's been way too obvious about it and Ling's just been ignoring it to stop things from being weird. He grinds his teeth a little and adds, “I don’t care that she was asking about me and Winry.”
“You know that’s not what this is really about, Ed.”
