Summary
Ryland Grace knew he wasn’t a typical alpha. He wasn’t imposing, aggressive (with a couple exceptions proving the rule, he supposed) or dominant in his relationships (especially, ahem, the intimate ones). Sure, he did get protective of people he cared about, his kids especially, but not to a degree as great as any textbook alpha would.
So he knew it for a fact – Ryland Grace was not a typical alpha.
And then Simon came along and turned everything Ryland thought he knew about himself upside down.
That was what was going through Ryland’s mind as he pinned an Eridian to the ground, a deep, guttural growl spilling out over his lips as he bared his teeth, standing between the Eridian and Simon, who was huddling in on himself a few feet away, breathing heavily in distress.
Which only served to make Ryland’s grip on the Eridian tighter.

He did laugh that time, a bit too loud and high pitched. “You… you can’t be serious,” he said, stepping away from her in growing horror. “You want me to marry the guy?”
“I want you to study him closely, observe every little behavior you can. You'll need permanent access to him, so yes,” she told him with far too much patience, “I want you to marry the guy.”

(or, Grace is a mage trying to figure out why a whole constellation has disappeared. for some reason this means getting married to a man who may or may not have borne witness to the godpower that did it... you know, for humanity's sake.)

Summary
Grace's webbed hands press against the glass, his curious chitters surprising the young man standing next to the viewport he was observing from. He’s newer on the team, Grace jogs his memory for his name again.
The young man holds his hand to his chest, breathing a sigh of relief, “Oh hey, Grace. Come to see your new neighbor?”
He nods, chirping his burning question, “Who is it?”
“Dunno,” Chris, right, that’s his name– “It’s another mer.”
(Or, Rocky and Adrian are helped by a merman named Grace, and in turn they save him. Now happily living in the Erid Marine Rehabilitation & Research Center, Grace is surprised when another injured merman named Simon is brought to recover in a neighboring tank. Perhaps, these two lost souls may finally have a home, together.)

If it is something beyond him, well maybe…
Ryland’s eyes glance up to the temple on the hill.
He’s not one who often turns to the gods. This village worships a different god from the ones Ryland recalls the fellowship or his hometown building temples and monuments for. He’s less familiar with this one. The Blood-Eyed One, the villagers call him.
(Or, the harvest in the village Ryland lives in is dying and the people are growing desperate. Their last hope is a sacrifice to the Blood-Eyed One, the Butcher.)
