  1. Summary

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
    Pro patria mori.

    Summary

“Remus.” Sirius begged. Then he panicked further as the wolf fit his jaw over his throat, pained tears slipping from his eyes, bloodied sneakers scraping against the forest floor. “It’s me. I’m Sirius. You know who I am. You’re—”

The wolf did not recognize him. Nor did the wolf hesitate to bite down, teeth sinking into flesh.

Sirius Black returns from Christmas Break as a shell of his former self. He no longer laughs. His skin bruises when it’s touched. His heart seldom beats. Worst of all, something sinister seems to be lurking within the halls of Hogwarts. Something that seeks to destroy all that Sirius has left, starting and ending with one Remus Lupin, fangs sharp enough to cut clean through to the heart.

    Summary

    “What’s the plan?”

    “I don’t know…”

“Well we’ve kind of just kidnapped a boy, Remus, so if you could come up with a plan—!”

    “I don’t know James! I’m trying, okay—?!”

    “G-guys—! He’s waking up!”

“Hello? Are you… alright? M-my name is Remus Lupin… I’m really sorry… but I hit you with my truck.”

“Well, now we’re definitely going to prison.”

    ———
Remus Lupin isn’t the type to drive under the influence. Yet here he was — in the dead of night, during a storm, on a dark country road — standing over the body of a boy he’s just hit with his truck.

When the boy wakes with no memory of who he is, Remus offers to take him in until he recovers.

But something isn’t adding up. And Remus can’t shake the feeling that the boy’s past is far darker, and closer, than he’s currently letting on.

    ———
Sirius Black isn’t suffering from amnesia. Not really. He’s lying.

Because, really, he’s running — hiding from his family who insist they’re only trying to save his soul.

And Sirius can’t go back. He won’t. Not now that he’s had a taste of freedom.

sirius runs his grubby thumbs down and up the bump bump dip of remus’ spine, smiles into the small of his back, smiles against his shoulderblade, smiles and whispers –but how did you know moony, my moony? in the peach soft whorl of his ear and remus says (wicked eyes, bright eyes, blue) with his pale mouth now so red and wet and there, he says –you waggle when you walk

    Summary

Sirius stands there in the kitchen, clothes still hanging off his slight frame even after months of Remus’ mediocre cooking, one sock slipping down his ankle; a man so perfectly shattered, like he’s a pearl and Remus is an open wound sliced on the edge of the oyster, stinging with salt and sand mixed in with blood, a sacrifice in the pursuit of treasure.

“I’m sorry,” Sirius tells him. Again. Like it makes a difference.

Remus scoffs a little. “Yeah,” he says. “Me too.”

or: after 1981, Remus does his best to keep going, until eventually Sirius comes back.
