“Luigi, are you in there?” Mario lifted his flashlight, its halo of light revealing the murky, algal shade of green of the tunnel’s core. Mario shivered, both from the chill of the odd air current flowing into the pipe and from the unease creeping into his bones. He shook his head and backed away, carefully lowering himself from the lip of the pipe back down to the concrete floor.
Luigi was curious and inquisitive, traits that had landed him in unlucky situations more times than Mario could count, but he was also as skittish as a deer. If that pipe put Mario on edge, the plumber thought to himself decisively, there was no way Luigi would go anywhere near it.
Or: An AU where Luigi keeps a slightly better grip on his pipe wrench and leaves his family with a missing person case.

Summary
Panic reaching transcendental heights, Kris tried to pry their hands away, only to find them rooted firmly to the spot, slowly but surely dissolving into the larger mass of Noelle's back. Failing this, they tried to twist away, to create some distant between Kris and Noelle — to create any distance between Kris and Noelle — only to be met with a sickening CRUNCH that sent them lurching forwards.
The barrier between the twos flesh didn't seem to matter anymore. Their ribcages interlocked, intent on devouring one another. The sensation of bone grinding against bone was nauseating.
Their faces were just a few inches apart now, legs intertwined and slowly dissolving. Kris's body — what was left of it — hung limp and useless. Noelle held them like they were the last worthwhile thing in the world.

Kris and Noelle become an Amalgamate at the bottom of the lake. What ensues is... nothing good.

**CHAPTER 5 WEIRD ROUTE SPOILERS AHEAD**
Susie was the one who found them. Kris had been holding Noelle’s chin up, out of the water, and Susie would always swear Noelle was still alive for a heartbeat after bringing the duo ashore. A heartbeat, however, is only that. Days later, an investigative team arrive at Hometown and rub salt in the wound, claiming that all signs point to Kris being the perpetrator of this murder-suicide.
Although the lie was at first met with disbelief, it gradually began to infect the thoughts of Hometown’s residents like a plague. Susie can’t bring either of her companions back, but she can at least wipe the dust from Kris’ name, can’t she?
