Summary
Flames lick the crumbling ruins of the monastery. They dance lightly over the stone and blacken the colourful bunting. There is so much heat radiating from the wreckage Abby feels she could be standing next to the sun. The fire, so agile in its consumption, seems utterly divorced from the roaring, crashing noise that permeates the boiling air.
People are running, yelling. People she knows, has known forever, scramble from the interior of their holy temple as it collapses. They scream in pain, clutching broken limbs and brandishing smoking, blistering skin.
All this seems far away, compared to the wingclaps above her. They thump in the air like heartbeats. Abby looks up.
Fire comes down.

Caitlyn's on a mission. She's traveling to a planet people go to disappear with the intention of finding someone. She's booked passage on an alien cargo hauler because it will keep her out of sight of the people who would rather she remained strictly in Coalition-controlled territory. She's investigated her case extensively. This does not appear to be sufficient.
There's a conscript on board who won't stop watching her, and their alien body language proves much harder to comprehend then the text books made it seem. What do they want? And how can Caitlyn keep them from getting in the way of what she intends to do?

Recently though, she’s seemed to slow down. As if she’s afraid to make progress because she’ll be ripped away from her life again. Link doesn’t know how to communicate that he feels the same way. How to communicate that he’s waiting, cowering, and afraid. And still, he’d do it a third time, lose another limb, run straight into malice if it meant they’d get to sleep in the same bed. Even if it’s back to back."
