    “Is over, and you’ve been making that argument every day for the last month. It’s been seven, Edwin, you’re a month late, we’re doing it now.”
    “I really don’t feel that’s necessary,” Edwin said as he phased through the door, and Crystal heard the stiffness in it even before she could see his face. The face was all tight, and Charles’s was, too, as he followed Edwin through, although Charles was trying to cover it by looking confident and firm.

    (Edwin tries to avoid unpleasant-but-necessary medical care, Charles has to fill a role he does not enjoy, and Crystal may, somehow, not entirely against her will, be getting roped in as a platonic third to Charles and Edwin's totally-not-a-decades-long-marriage.)

    Charles starts pacing. He never used to, when he was alive, but thirty years and he's picked up all sorts of habits from Edwin. Edwin paces when he's thinking, but mostly Charles does it when he needs to move and there's nowhere to go. There's a pulse thrumming at the base of his throat, which is all kinds of weird. That only happens now when his body forgets he's dead; when it's reacting to something bigger than he is, base and animal.

    "If it's an enchantment, then you can sort it," Charles says. "I don't reckon there's a spell out there Edwin Payne can't work out, yeah? We just have to find the right book."

    Edwin stumbled and choked on a laugh. Charles kept a solid hold on him so he wouldn’t fall. “What exactly do you call this style?”

    “It’s an underground dance,” Charles said dismissively. “Doesn’t have a name. It was all the rage in my day though, trust me.”

    Edwin laughed out loud this time. “Of course, I forgot about the ballroom dance craze of 1987.”

    “Exactly. Now hold on!” Edwin knew Charles well enough by now to intuit what he meant, and he latched onto Charles’ shoulder with a death grip just before Charles dipped him low to the ground.

    “You’re going to drop me!” he sputtered. Charles laughed and hauled him back up. They both knew full well that Charles would do no such thing. Edwin just liked to act scandalized for the fun of it.

    “Have I ever dropped you before?” Charles asked smugly, falling back into a two-step.

    “There’s a first time for everything,” Edwin retorted.

    It was all over, he could feel it. Whatever 'It' was, it had gone back to sleep. He knew he should be disappearing. The reason he was created - it was complete. Yet he couldn't feel the telltale sensation of fading away. He knew it should be coming. All the others who were around him, the other dolls and creatures - they had all faded away. He could even feel those in other parts of the town fading away too.
    Yet here he was, strings, joints, and all. Still moving, still existing. Still alive?
    Was he alive?

     

    In the house on Neibolt street during the 27 years between, two creatures still remained awake. From making houses for their pet maggots to refurbishing the entire house, they work together to create a life together, while struggling with understanding their feelings as well as the reason for their own existence.
