When what should have been a straight forward mission in Hell's Kitchen goes pear shaped due to lack of communication, teaching his teammates sign language seems like a logical step to Clint. Communication when their comms are down - great plan! And including the local vigilante, who's been working closely with them on this, is a real no-brainer.
Until it turns out said vigilante is an asshole that thinks sign language is beneath him, judging by the way he's stubbornly refusing to learn it.
(Conversely - Matt's trying, he really is but damn it, those two signs are exactly the same... what do you mean they mean completely different things?!)

How he came across it and paid for it no less (the baby tree didn’t exactly have money to buy surprises for anyone) no one was really sure, but when he came skipping back to the group carrying his prize, no one questioned it.
Or: The team watches Lilo and Stitch together. And absolutely zero of them are able to remain unemotional about it.

Summary
Every choice, even the most minute one, has consequences.
Steve Rogers chose Bucky Barnes over not only Tony Stark, but the rest of the entire world as well, and he stubbornly stuck to his choice well past the point of no return.
Leaving Siberia behind him with Bucky finally at his side, Steve foolishly thought all the consequences of his choice had been dealt with. He couldn't even begin to fathom the immensity of the butterfly effect that the events of Siberia would have caused. Nobody could know at that time, but from the moment Tony Stark finally woke up in the Avengers Compound's infirmary with Extremis running in his veins, the entire universe would never be the same again.

[In which the world domination's an accidental byproduct of business as usual in Stark Industries, and JARVIS is so, very grounded because Tony didn't sign up for this, how was this his life, where did he go wrong in his life choices and stop laughing, Strange, dammit!]
TWiFFON and FtOS happen concurrently, but FtOS focuses on the more behind-the-scenes portions of TWiFFON, the things that might've been missed otherwise.
