Commander Shepard didn't grow up dreaming of the stars. She grew up in the lower wards of New York, learning that survival means never letting anyone get close enough to hurt. The Alliance gave her a purpose, missions, rank—forged her into a weapon. It was enough, until Saren, until the hunt for a rogue Spectre pulled her into an alliance with an asari archaeologist who refused to be pushed away and breached her walls.
This is the story of the woman behind the legend: a street kid who became a soldier, a soldier who became a symbol, and the slow, unwilling process of learning that letting someone in doesn't have to mean losing them. Follows the events of Mass Effect 1, with original characters, deepened backstory, and a few sharp edges of its own.

What they find are two human stowaways. One, an angry and defensive child with a sharp tongue. The Other, a meek, nonverbal younger child who appears to be ill.

John Shepard: decorated war hero, defender of the Citadel, and savior of the galaxy against rouge Turian Spectre Saren Arterius. Killed in action by a surprise 'Geth' attack at the age of 30.
Kaidan Alenko: 32-year-old long-term serving Alliance soldier, a survivor of 'BAat' training for biotic students, and survivor of the 'Geth' attack. Lost in an empty void with his Commander gone.
Both men have faced hurt and loss, together they became close friends on the Normandy SR-1, some speculate more than friends. Both knew that their friendship was more, but neither had the chance to admit that before Shepard was killed and Kaidan is resigned.
However, Commander Shepard is alive, two years later, improved and reborn through cybernetic implants and billions of credits spent to revive the once-lost soldier. While she recovers from her debilitating injuries, she finds a new mission: helping the survivors on the Citadel stay alive. As the galaxy begins its recovery from the War, they find help in the form of an unexpected ally, and Shepard finds herself torn between two lovers.
Meanwhile, Kaidan Alenko and the crew of the Normandy find themselves on a jungle planet after the Crucible fires. Kaidan works through his pain at the loss of Shepard by helping the survivors and the fleet prepare for their eventual return to the Sol System. If they make it home, will he be able to keep living without Shepard?
