One night during a training camp, Hinata is freezing and it's impossible for him to warm up. Kageyama notices.
Or: Kageyama lacks the social cues to see the problem with two friends sharing a futon when their teammates are asleep in the same room (because, obviously, the dumbass is cold and, more obviously, Kageyama can't have their best decoy get sick on the first day of training camp; that's a no-no), and Hinata thinks that maybe, just maybe, he doesn't hate Kageyama as much as he thought. Maybe he never hated him at all.

Summary
In a canon-divergent 'verse where corporal punishment is allowed and encouraged in schools, the Karasuno Volleyball Club starts out with a different coach and teacher-advisor. The coach has it in for the smaller or milder-seeming guys - Ennoshita, Nishinoya and particularly Hinata. Eventually they are rescued by BAMF Ukai and adorable Takeda, but not before Hinata suffers a serious beating that demoralizes him from which Karasuno must help him recover. Protective Kageyama, of course, protective Tanakas and Noya, protective Daisuga, protective everyone, really.
