Actual wordcount ~30k. Amazing fic that chilled me to my core with Phoenix's torture. Great fluff at the end.
I love Phoenix bonding with Miles over his case, congratulating and treating him, and worrying about Miles overworking himself. Miles thinking that his last memories of Phoenix might be his smile and concern was so sad. Phoenix's shock when he hears from his kidnappers that Miles shows weakness because of him and Phoenix not wanting Miles to give up on justice because of him was sad. I loved Phoenix saying to his captors that Miles won't play to their whims.
The kidnappers faking the background noise, crushing Miles' hopes of rescue, was chilling. I didn't expect them to cut off Phoenix's finger and wrist. It's chilling how the kidnappers set up a timetable of death, with each day injuring Phoenix until death. Pheonix wanting to forever be unconscious because of the pain and feeling bad he's been used to guilt trip Miles was sad. The kidnappers forcing Phoenix to stay awake, drugging him with stimulants, was so cruel too. The chief prosecutor threatening Miles that he'll strip Miles of his badge if he negotiates with the kidanppers is so cruel too.
I love Miles turning to illegal means to try to save Phoenix, after being let down by the law; that was interesting. Phoenix becoming numb to the pain and no longer fearing what comes next was heartbreaking, being tired of the pain and not wanting to return home, abandoning hope.
Great Miles angst: Miles condemning the law for not being able to save one person, not caring about repercussions if it were to save Phoenix. Miles resisting the chief prosecutor saying he won't face him until Phoenix recovers was swet. I loved the media and public interrupting their arrest of Miles. Miles crying about the impact on Phoenix and not being able to protect him was so sad.
Gumshoe crying that Phoenix was alive was sweet. Franziska standing up to the chief prosecutor was amazing too and saying what to do with Miles to save face. Franziska covering her own unauthorised handling of a gun was smart.
I loved Phoenix asking if MIles was OK the first thing he woke up in the hospital. Phoenix asking Miles to not be sorry and that he believed in him is heartbreaking. Miles cutting the apple with the knife triggering Phoenix's PTSD, recalling his torture, is chilling, plus Miles telling Phoenix to not apologise for the flashback. Miles calling himself unworthy as a prosecutor and friend due to not being able to protect Phoenix was crushing. Phoenix responding that if Miles gave in, that he wouldn't be the Miles he knows, and that when he knew Miles was coming, that gave him hope to live, was touching. I love Phoenix asking Miles to forgive himself and relax.
Phoenix being able to joke in his injrued state is so like him, even joking that he's a judge declaring Miles not guilty and not allwoing him to appeal.
The fluff: Miles struggling to hold back his romantic feelings for Phoenix after nearly losing him, feeling the tension when buttoning Phoenix's shirt for him and being close to him. Phoenix admitting he was going to read the letters of his former clients celebrating his discharge because each letter has their sentiments, and Miles feeling guilty for ignoring Phoenix's letters. Phoenix asking Miles to sleep with him was sweet, and Miles being embarrassed at being so close to Phoenix leading to the love confession. Phoenix knowing about Miles' feelings but not confessing because he felt Miles should make the first step. Miles realising how far Phoenix's devotion went as far as the class trial.
Franziska asking Phoenix why he isn't wearing the expensive eyepatch she got him is hilarious, and Miles trying to stop Larry telling Maya he saw them both cuddling in bed. Perfect humour to end off this amazing angsty fic.
