Summary
Jack was a steady presence in his life that he was thankful for; they watched hockey together, they went to stupidly fancy breweries to try stupidly fancy kinds of beer, they would even go hiking or fishing together for a weekend; and yes, sometimes they fucked. But, always, they gravitated towards one another like magnets, the thrilling warmth of being next to someone who got you, someone with whom you needed to share no words to just know.
So yeah, he wouldn't call Jack his best friend.Robby has a habit of explaining away that weird closeness he shares with Jack, to himself and to others.

“Jack, wait –”
“Nah, none of that. Let me definitely see that there isn’t a baby currently in my living room. I know there’s not an infant inside my house.”
“Jack –” but Robby doesn’t try to stop him.
The baby sits in one of the carriers the hospital lends out, strapped in, clad in a white onesie with colorful ducks swimming across it. A pacifier clipped to the onesie sits in the crook of the baby’s arm, out of her mouth and probably the reason for fussing. Jack squats – a delicate balancing act with the crutch – and puts it back in her mouth. Her big blue eyes lock on to his face.
“How did you get here?” he asks, nonchalant and rhetorical.
“I strapped the carrier like a sidecar to the bike.”
Jack does not deviate his attention. “No, he sure fucking didn’t, did he? That would’ve been insane. Almost as insane as bringing you here in the first place.”Robby cannot resist helping someone in need; Jack cannot resist helping his best friend.

“So we're what, exactly?” Robby can hear the irritation in his own voice. “Boyfriends? Partners?”
“More like roommates with legal benefits,” says Jack.
“What?”
“Husbands, Mike. We're husbands," Jack clarifies, apparently taking pity on him. "Lawfully wedded and all that.”
A motorcycle accident leaves Robby with temporary amnesia, a broken arm, and a very attractive man he can't remember marrying.

Summary
Jack and Robby get drunk together at a conference where they're staying at the same hotel, one thing leads to another and they end up hooking up. It isn't great.
Robby isn't sure what he wants until after Jack's already moved on... and not just with anyone, with a guy who treats him like crap. Which suddenly makes it very clear to Robby who he would rather Jack was dating.

Trinity and Dennis exchange looks, both clearly flabbergasted at the idea. Trinity wrinkles her nose. “Wait. You mean to tell us that you spent $100 to have two sandwiches delivered?”
Robby, on the other hand, just shrugs. “Full disclosure, it was two sandwiches and four pickles, but yes. It’s Jack’s favorite.”
Jack preens. “And no, you can’t have a pickle, either.” He takes an aggressive bite out of one, just to prove his point. He does hand it over to Robby after, though, who takes it and happily chomps down.
OR: After buying Jack lunch during a shared shift, Robby’s favorite kids comment that Robby must be Jack’s sugar daddy. After adjusting to a world view that includes Robby loving him back, Jack makes it clear that he’s more than willing to start paying his debt.

“That’s ok, don’t worry, man,” Jack whispers softly, cupping the other man’s face in his hands to shower him with small pecks, “We’re rusty, it happens.” he smiles slightly as Robby’s fingers brush against the leather collar, softly secured around Jack’s neck.

A cup of the cafeteria's differently-shitty coffee in hand, Jack pulled up short at finding the deserted hallway no longer deserted: seven-year-old Mason Hayes now stood in his path, wearing his Spider-Man costume, the very same one that Olive had cut off him two hours ago as he coded on Jack's table and then died.
That made sense. 0347 after Halloween, his ED full of desolate kids and drunken adults, it was the ideal time to add a psychotic break to the mix. Just what the doctor ordered.
"What're you doing here, Mason?" Jack asked, keeping his voice mild and curious. He'd love an answer to that question, actually.
"Don't be sad. I get to play with Bear again. And see my gran."

Now, as he pushes open the doors to
histheir chambers, Robby can’t help but once again wonder why Jack seems to have accepted the arrangement, and indeed, Robby himself, so readily. To be sure, marrying Robby gives Jack a massive boost in terms of prestige and standing throughout the various kingdoms of Turtle Island*, as well as financial stability. But it also means spending the rest of his life with Robby.OR: Prince Michael has just married a minor noble from a distant kingdom. Once the celebration has ended and it’s time for the consummation, Robby learns two things: a) his new husband is a virgin, and b) that same new husband has been in love with him for years. Robby certainly knows how to take care of the first one.

Summary
He’d invited Jack over without thinking it through. It had seemed natural after their shift—Jack mentioning he didn’t have plans, Robby offering up the game as an excuse to not go home to an empty apartment. A normal thing colleagues did. Except now he was hyperaware of every movement Jack made, every casual gesture that sent Robby’s thoughts spiraling into territory that had nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with how Jack’s hands would feel on his skin.
