Ah, there was the self-sacrificing attitude he was so used to from Gale. But it didn’t seem to fit him right. There was no mention of the orb, no appeal to his goddess, nothing of the sort. It was like he was a puppet of himself, saying lines that had been whispered in his ear.

Or was he the beloved, pulled up from the land of the dead by a strength far greater than his own? Or was he both, somehow? He’d always been a creature of contradictions, after all.
Either way, he knew how the story ended. One of them would be dragged back to the darkness and the other left to live with the despair of knowing they could have saved them, had they not turned around, like Lot’s wife viewing the destruction of the city she was fleeing from.
