“Are you unhappy to be back home?”
“No!” he yells, eyes widening as he whips his head to look at Techno again. He realizes himself and quickly backtracks, “I mean– I love being home. Been a while, and all that, you know.”
Techno opens his mouth, only to shut it a moment later. Tommy’s breath shakes in his lungs as the snake constricts around them. He clenches his shaky hands into fists and tries to focus on the colorful graphics that display across the screen.
Techno only lets him have a moment before saying, “Did you like college?”
“Yeah,” he lies, wincing internally at the way his voice wavers.
He wants to reach a hand inside his chest and pull the reptile from around his organs. But, they’re too busy trying to hold his seams together, the thread of his composure pulling taught.
“Do you want to go back?”
Or, Tommy returns from his first year of college and doesn’t want to go back. He fears the disappointment the news will bring.

It had been Techno’s idea. Tommy was right they hadn’t managed to get away together in a long time, a mixture of work, school and other things had meant that what was supposed to be a yearly boys trip away hadn’t happened in almost five. But with Techno planning to go off to university in September, and Wilbur looking to move to London for his big music break, it seemed like there was no time left to get away. And so, the road trip was planned.
Phil had his holidays saved enough to take a little over a month off, and they were going to spend that time travelling around the UK. Phil glanced at the van, which was overloaded with food, some hiking gear and three excited kids. Well, one overly excited child and two appropriately calm teenagers.//
