Dean’s still contemplating how to answer this without saying something offensive—he never has figured out a polite way to say “no homo”—when Cas answers for him. Cas doesn’t even look up from his plate, his mouth full of baklava and some stray flakes of phyllo dough sticking to his lips when he says, “Yes.”
Dean feels more than sees Sam go very still across the table, forkful of salad and grilled chicken poised in midair.

Eli was kneeling, holding a necklace with a cross he must’ve found in the studio, with a tight knuckled grip. His head hung over the ledge of the open window as he bent over the radiator, which was scorching his shirt, pressing into his ribs. He gasped in pain, then relaxed, as his skin knit together. Eli bowed his head. A soft glow was emanating, a hiss of sound from the steam heater burning into skin, a rotting smell, followed by healing as Eli groaned, ducking his head so the heater burned into the skin underneath his neck, whispering words Victor could only make out like fragments of words hidden in blocks of text:
O Lord // forgive me // I pray // for your // holy guidance
“Your rosary won’t save you,” Victor called, sitting on the carpet, back against the cabinet, stretching his legs out.
“It’s a cross necklace,” Eli said suddenly, sitting back on his heels so that he wasn’t burning himself, “it’s missing the beads.”
“Burning yourself doesn’t redeem you, Ever. You’re not atoning for your sins, you’re trying to forget about them.”
