“I guess that depends,” he replies, his voice surprisingly even. “Do you regret any of them?”
Suguru’s smile deepens. “No.”
Suguru Geto defects from jujutsu society in 2007, after killing one hundred and twelve non-sorcerers in a remote village in northern Japan.
He returns in 2016, a suitcase in one hand and two thirteen year old girls hanging onto the other.

Summary

And in his lifetime of hiding, he thought he’d gotten quite adept at it.

“They didn't die in a car accident,” she said. “You knew.”
“Yeah,” he admitted. What else was there to say? For all his confusion of why everyone had tripped over their feet to lie about their parents’ deaths, when it came to telling Akane he too had caved in and repeated the weak story about a car crash. He couldn't quite tell why. They were dead either way.
Akane looked at him with a sort of passive, resigned look to her face. She didn't seem angry or betrayed, only old for her years, but that had been true ever since she'd walked out of that incinerator a living paradox.
“Does it matter?” he asked. “And anyway, I only really knew about mom. I overheard them talking about her.”
