"You don't think he..." Shane says slowly. "That he did this on purpose?"

"I don't know. What has he said to you?" Svetlana asks.

Nothing, Shane wants to say, but that's not completely true. He and Ilya talk every day. It's normal, or at least feels normal. It feels like having a boyfriend, and Shane really loves having a boyfriend. He loves loving Ilya and being loved by him, but Ilya hasn't said anything to him. Nothing important. Nothing that would indicate that he would drive his Porsche into the country, unbuckle his seatbelt, and crash into a guardrail on purpose.

    ~

Ilya is found critically injured after a car accident on a quiet back road in Ottawa. Shane doesn't have much to do but wait for news from Svetlana in Ilya's empty house, listless and useless and spinning wild scenarios in his exhaustion. He starts drinking the beers in Ilya's fridge to pass the time, but time has other ideas, namely, ideas on how he can help Ilya without ever stepping foot in the hospital.

    Summary

For over fifteen years, a strict performance diet has worked for Shane. It lets him play hockey - really good hockey - and it lets him control something in his life, which usually feels so out of his control.

After a season-ending injury takes Shane off the ice, though, the people he loves start to suspect something might be wrong.

    OR

Rachel Reid said she didn't think Shane has an eating disorder, and we took that personally.

    Summary

Shane's body feels warm and still inclined to movement — he rubs his own thighs gently, long strokes up and down. It seems like Ilya and Sasha just kiss for a long time, but Shane's still not sure he can be trusted to sort seconds from minutes from hours.

Finally, they shed some clothes — Sasha’s shirt, which flutters so elegantly to the ground. Ilya's top. Sasha puts a hand in the centre of Ilya's chest.

"How do you want to do this?" His eyes flick over to Shane. "I am guessing these days you have a… habit." His lips twitch. "But as you know, I'm flexible."

Shane is fixated on the way Sasha's fingers look against Ilya's skin, so it takes a moment to process the words.

    "Sorry," he says. "Wait. What?"

I asked myself, what would it take for Hollanov to switch, and it turns out my answer was Shane experiencing a total psychic collapse, featuring Sasha being an absolute menace.
