Pushing down her wants in order to focus on her plan, her goals, was Samira’s area of expertise and she was suddenly so utterly exhausted by it. She’d spent years denying herself of her physical and emotional cravings and for what? At this point, she was pretty confident that her career would still be in the same place regardless of whether she was having sex regularly.
She wanted this, wanted Emery, so badly that she felt like she might explode if she couldn’t have it.
A typical post-shift hangout turns into Samira (finally) deciding to go after what she wants. And Emery is what she wants.

What she does mind is the number of drunk patients who throw up on her, the drunk patients who assume she and Emery Walsh are together because of a shared hoodie, and the drunk patients who demand she and Walsh kiss when the clock hits midnight.

“We should go out,” Emery declared before biting into her tacos, hoping she didn’t look like a complete untamed beast eating. She’d been raised to have impeccable manners but she eschewed most of the useless crap they’d tried to drill into her. Unfortunately for her parents, she had absorbed their stubborn streak.
Samira stared at her wide-eyed but said nothing. She also gave nothing away so Emery couldn’t tell if she was completely repulsed by the idea. She tucked a curl behind her ear and seemed to go inward a moment.
“We are out.”
She was being cheeky but hiding it behind this mask of earnestness that Emery enjoyed more than obvious sarcasm.
“Think about it. Yolanda would stop nagging at me about going on dates, and you actually get to go on them. Experience life outside of the Pitt.”
Samira nibbled gingerly on her own meal, making a valiant attempt to not make a mess. She set her own taco down carefully, leaning her arms back on the bench, staring up at the few clouds left in the twilight sky.
