She held it between her fingers, the silver band warm from his own hands. It had a black square stone at its center which looked dark blue when the sun hit it.
“It’s beautiful,” she murmured.
“It’s a Vinkun family ring, given to the male in the family upon graduation,” he explained.
“Fiyero, no, I can’t accept this,” she tried to return it to his hand, which only made him laugh. Something so light it made her stop in her tracks.
“Please, I want you to have it.”

“Ha. But yes, I do think I would break the law, if ethics called for it. And if I felt strongly for the cause. Would you?”
“Yes, I think so,” she agreed. “But I’d want to be noble about it. Not just flamboyant disregard for the law. It would need to be something worth a lot to me.”

His eyes meet hers, wide and begging. MJ is admittedly both charmed and flustered. He’s hit her with that look before. Hell, he used it on her earlier today when he wanted to get a bag of peanuts before the meet and she wanted to rush to the auditorium. But now, with his hair outlined by the yellow glow of nearby streetlamps and the intimacy of their uninterrupted company, MJ finds it harder to resist. She tells herself it’s because she’s tired and just wants to go home, but she knows the real reason.
“Fine,” she sighs. “Let’s just go.”

Michelle smiled because she was surrounded by the essence of her favorite season, by blood red and canary yellow, by wind and those small swirls of leaves that would spin around like a small tornado when they were caught in it, by that feeling she couldn’t describe. Fall. And normally, she’d think, sharing this season with someone like Peter Parker would desecrate her view of it, but oddly, it made it… better, somehow.

It’s not a long list either. It’s her Dad (because he’s the best person she knows), her Nan (because she’s a fucking badass), Rutger Bregman (because everyone has a celebrity crush and hers happens to be the dude who went to Davos and roasted a bunch of billionaires), May (because like MJ’s Dad, she’s the living proof that losing the love of your life doesn’t have to turn you into a bitter, dysfunctional parent), her Uncle Nick (even though he’s never around), Ned (because they have more in common than one might think), and a certain puppy-eyed loser who was already late for class on their first day at Midtown.
(Surprisingly, said puppy-eyed loser made it on time on their last day at Midtown, so it’s fair to say that there might be hope for him yet.)

(He would catch them mid-air with helpless confusion painting wrinkles on his face, and he would wolf them down under her scrutinising gaze.)
They never talked about it, that Saturday afternoon she’d bought him a blueberry scone, and how keeping him fed slowly became a self-imposed duty of hers. They never talked about anything, really. They never had to. There was an understanding between them – silent but unmistakable – and it looks like it never went missing because one minute her hands unfold to reveal the cracked remains of the necklace, prompting him to stutter out apologies, and the next he’s cut off by her lips and –
