Nobody really understood what Dazai and Ranpo were.
Geniuses, sure.
Human? Absolutely.

Kind to the little ones, silly where needed and often times when not, diligent in their tasks and headstrong.
Easy to bribe, soft beneath the hard exterior and hard beneath the soft, wrapped up in their thoughts when left alone for too long.
Ranpo and Dazai were all these things to the other members of the Agency and more. But to each other?
They were just Dazai and Ranpo, Ranpo and Dazai. And really, did they need any more than that?

Summary
Kunikida pinched the bridge of his nose. “What does this have to do with us?”
Tachihara grinned. “I invited him to sit with us at lunch tomorrow.”
There was a beat of silence. The espresso machine shrieked in the background.
“You did what?” Kunikida asked.
“It’s called being welcoming,” Tachihara replied defensively. “You should try it sometime.”
“Inviting a complete stranger into an established study group without prior discussion is not welcoming,” Kunikida said tightly. “It is impulsive.”
Nikolai clutched their chest theatrically. “Impulsive? In this group? Never.”
“It’s just lunch,” Atsushi said quickly. “Right? He can meet everyone, see if he vibes.”
“Vibes are not a measurable metric,” Kunikida muttered.
Ranpo leaned forward, eyes sharp despite the lazy posture. “Doppo-kun is worried the new guy will disrupt his sacred seating arrangement.”
“I am not worried,” Kunikida snapped. “I am concerned about efficiency.”
“Sure,” Dazai said sweetly.

Summary
Dazai turns his head so he can watch Nikolai’s expression as he asks, “Why are you really here?”
Nikolai laughs, maniacal, throwing its head back. The noise echoes so loudly Dazai fears it will wake Kunikida next door. “Because!” It claps its hands together. “You saved my life, so now, I’m going to be your problem to deal with!”
Dazai thinks, really, he wouldn’t really mind Nikolai being a problem that has attached itself to him. It’ll keep things exciting. It’ll keep him guessing.
It’ll give him a reason to live.
