Aventurine’s chest hurts. He can feel something thick and wet dripping down his front, but when he looks down there’s nothing there.
Is this real? This can’t be real. Ratio’s expression is achingly sincere, a look that he’s never seen before. Surely the professor wouldn’t be caught directing such feelings at Aventurine of all people.
And yet, the man leans over the desk to gently brace his palms against the sides of Aventurine’s face. Aventurine realizes that he can’t feel the chair underneath him, or the scratch of fur trim against his neck, or the wood grain under his fingers—Ratio’s warm touch is the only thing that feels real.
“There are people waiting for you, Aventurine. I don’t know if that thought brings you comfort, but it is the truth.”
Aventurine is having a confusing time at the Horizon of Existence.

Aventurine's words catch in his throat. He exhales slowly, anchoring himself with the pain radiating from his ribs.
"VP-0841R," he murmurs, collapsing onto the floor and covering his eyes with his uninjured arm to shield them from the flashing lights. "I copy."
Despite everything, a faint smile tugs at the corners of his lips.
Ratio is here. He's in good hands.

When the curtain falls, he swaps Hoho’s grinning mask for a scarier one, the savage, the lurker, the jack-of-all trades. Mean. Surly. Lino hides him just as effectively as Hoho.
It’s endurable, he tells himself. He has everyone he needs, he knows they’re safe, and they don’t even know there’s someone missing.
