Court was hurting and needed to rest. Naturally he refused to do so and Ryland and Claire guilted him into it anyway. They switched from a motel to a hotel with adjoining rooms because Ryland agreed with Claire. She needed her own space. They ordered take-out and watched bad television. He bought a pack of cards and Claire dominated every game they taught her. Ryland was disconcerted by how good her poker face was but Court just looked impressed and proud of it.

But of course he did. His brother truly doted on the kid and she looked to him for approval at every corner. They were a matched set, the two of them, tied together as much by their differences as the things they had in common. When Ryland was being honest with himself, he knew he was envious of their bond. He'd had that kind of relationship with Court before he went to prison but it was severely damaged by the death of their father.

    Maybe not forever though.

    Summary

Doctor Ryland Grace has always been a teacher.
Across ships– both sea and space fairing, late night cramming sessions beneath the unsteady lights of the college library; beyond the Earth itself. Grace has found himself awaiting curious eyes with the sort of natural nervous confidence documented only amongst educators and crash test dummies.

So when we ask: “Why is a school teacher in space?” The answer is obvious, so he could carve a classroom out of the stars.

“Mr Grace, what is the name of your bike?”

    “Excuse me?”

“Does your bike have a name sir, it really should”

And so, a challenge arose among Dr Grace’s classes, whichever class demonstrated the strongest efforts in their studies, and earned the highest collective score in rounds of “lava” would name Dr Grace’s famed bicycle. A bicycle so esteemed that Mr Grace needn’t lock it up at the school bike racks, because c’mon man, that's Mr Grace’s bike, he’ll be sad if you steal it.

    Summary

The humans threw Grace away. Grace, who worked so hard to save them, who came back for Rocky when he realized the taomoeba would eat through Rocky's ship. Grace, who gave up his chance to go home to save Erid too.

And then Rocky finds out exactly how Grace ended up in space.

They're not giving him back now. Grace will always have a place on Erid where he's beloved and cherished the way he should be, even if it takes Grace a while to believe he's worth that. Rocky may or may not have plans to fix up the Hail Mary for the trip back anyways- there were a few things they wanted to say directly to Stratt's face.

“Rocky? You asleep yet?” Lying next to each other in his bed, Grace knew for a fact he wasn’t.

“Rocky watching Ryland sleep.” Grace almost grinned when Rocky grumbled, but the thoughts stirring a cloud of anxiety in his stomach wouldn’t let him. “What Ryland think?”

“You don’t have to be mean about it.” He grumbled right back at Rocky, tapping Rocky’s suit with his left hand once in reproach. “I was just…” He trailed off, unsure how to actually say it.

“Is something wrong? Ryland want to talk about it?” Rocky immediately dropped the sass. He was worried about Grace- he’d been getting weaker in the last month or so; they still had just over four months left before they got to Erid. The race against the clock was entering it’s final leg.

“I just- god, it feels so juvenile to say out loud. What if the other Eridians don’t like me? Or aren’t interested in my presence? If they don't want me there, what do I do?”

“Ryland stupid.” The answer was immediate, but did nothing to assuage Grace’s fraying nerves. “Ryland save all of Erid. Ryland save Rocky multiple times. Eridians will love Ryland, Rocky promise.”

    Summary

"There is no point in any of this rumination. You are gone. You are nothing now but a muse, something that I can conjure upon command and listen. You are nothing more now than a lullaby, a prayer, a dissonant, augmented, ugly, beautiful melody."

Rocky and Grace part ways for their respective planets. It should feel like a victory. It doesn't.

    "Continue [video]."

You laughed and obliged. "Yes, ████."

    "Need word."

"Word of endearment," you simply said, rather quickly, as if you hoped I would misunderstand you. The fear in your body was so, so loud.

Through my sensor, I could hear the [image] of an [Earth] [flower] unfurling. There were liquid droplets on the surface of its folds.

"Common word of endearment in Eridian means," I paused, trying to navigate our shared vocabulary. "Like hatchling. Not young as but desire to protect and take care of like hatchling or pebble. Make no sense to human I assume." I sung the chord to you in Eridian so that you could log it in your translator.

It broke the tension enough to make you laugh. "We actually do have a very common word of endearment like that. Our version of that would be 'baby' or 'babe'."

This was not the same word of endearment you said to me previously.

"Word of endearment different than [Grace] said earlier."

"Oh, ████? It's similar, but not the same exact definition." Your [face] is crescendoing again. "It's a bit of an out-dated phrase. You only really hear it in old movies or from old folks. But I like it. It's kinda chaste. Just means something you care about. If you hold it close, it is ████ to you."

I log in the word "dear" into our dictionary.

Did I already sing that [Adrian] would have loved you? Of course I did. I remember everything.

The stranger is a woman with long red hair, wisps of gray tangled in the strands, and many fine lines on her face. She is in a black peacoat, her hands crossed on his desk. She sits there like she owns the place, like he’s stepped in on her. He can’t help but feel unsettled. He knows this woman. He knows her but he can’t put a name to her face.

    He bristles. “Who the hell—”

“I think you know exactly who I am, Denny Carmichael,” the woman says in a soft Dutch accent. “Please, take a seat.”

“You’re in my seat,” he seethes. “And you will tell me who you are right now—“

“Or what?” she says without flinching. “You’ll shoot me? You’ll have me arrested? Sit down, I don’t have time for this.”

Slowly, the pair sit in the chairs opposite Carmichael’s desk.

“Good, let us begin.” The woman pulls out a file and flips it open. Inside are a few sheets of paper; incarceration records. And a photograph—

Sierra Six. He’s younger, and it’s his mugshot. He’s… much younger. Younger than Carmichael would have thought. He has a bruise smearing across his right cheek. She stares into the camera, dead-eyed.

“Who is this man?” the woman asks.

Suzanne speaks. “That’s our asset, Sierra Six—“

    “Wrong.”
