Summary
”Imogen, when’s the last time you ate?” Laudna asks.
”Can’t keep anything down,” she admits, though does not say that the last time she tried was over a week ago. “Bread, tea, water, doesn’t matter.”
“I didn’t mean food,” Laudna says, and Imogen wants her to stop talking, Imogen no longer wants to listen to her lovely, rolling voice. “I meant blood.”
—
Imogen, cursed with magic she does not understand, continues a spectacularly poor run of luck and gains a second curse for her troubles. But is it really a curse if it saves her life? Is it really bad luck if it leads her to Laudna?

Summary
‘We would like to ask you something,’ she says, and then breaks off for a second. Dulcie’s eyes have gone very wide. That cornflower blue.
It’s all grammar in the end. The most simple kind of grammar, first-lesson things: pronouns, conjugation, matching the two to one another.
‘We,’ Camilla repeats, ‘would like to ask you something.’

Summary
Her smile was triumphant, predatory and fanged, and Imogen realised the extent to which she had been toyed. Her eyes, though, were warm. Laudna could never hide the warmth of her eyes.
“What have we here?” she said, low and taunting, with imperiousness that Imogen felt directly between her legs. “A pretty girl like you, all alone in the woods?”

Summary
“Nothin’ has to be different. Nothin’ has to change.”
It’s Laudna’s turn to have the corner of her mouth curl and quirk. “But hasn’t it already?” she asks, fingers reaching out and tangling with Imogen’s.
“Is that a bad thing?” Imogen’s voice pitches low, and Laudna feels something pulling, settling, low within her in turn.
Laudna shakes her head, mouth dry and voice gone. Imogen speaks for her.
“Kiss me,” she says. Asks. Pleads.
It’s too much, and Laudna has never been good at denying anything that Imogen wants.
Imogen tastes like oranges.
