Summary
Charlie clicked his tongue twice as he passed the cemetery, and within seconds, was joined by a scraggly black cat.
“Hello, darling,” Charlie cooed, stooping to scratch the creature’s chin, “Fancy a trip to the shops? I reckon you’ll get a few treats out of it.”
The cat purred as if understanding his words, pressing his head further into Charlie’s hand. Charlie grinned and stood back up, “Come on, then, let’s see if Jack’s got a fish for you.”
With that, the two of them made their way down the winding path, past the chapel and the old schoolhouse, past rundown farms and houses, until they reached the main - and only - paved road in town.

“That’s cool,” Charlie said, claiming the other seat and picking up an iPad, “So, what do you want?”
“Um, I’d like a tattoo, please,” Nick replied, picking at the skin by his thumbnail.
Charlie threw back his head and laughed, “Right, well, you’ve come to the right place, then. Do you have an idea of… what kind of tattoo you’d like?”
Temporarily stunned by the way Charlie’s face had shifted when he let out a genuine laugh, Nick had to take a moment to formulate his thoughts, “Right, sorry. I have sort of a vague idea? There’s a few elements I’d like to try and include?”
Charlie nodded, opening a blank page on his iPad, “Alright, what are you thinking? I’ll do pretty much anything. The only things I won’t tattoo are: hate symbols, offensive content, and Taylor Swift lyrics.”

Nick remained silent, his heart in his throat. He tried and failed to regulate his breathing.
“Nick?” Charlie asked, and despite the darkness, Nick knew that concern was written all over his face, “Did it knock you out too?”
”N-no,” Nick gritted out, his throat tight, “Sorry.”

Summary
Nick Nelson is not a religious man.
He doesn’t believe in any gods, doesn’t devote a second of his time to organized worship, or try to discern meaning from things unlikely to hold it, like tea leaves or the cosmos.
No paradise of the afterlife could ever compare to the sheer, all-consuming bliss of time spent at the altar of his lover, obeying every order like a command straight from God.
Nick Nelson does not need religion. His salvation is tangible, and always just an arm’s length away.

Summary
Charlie shivered involuntarily as he gazed up at the grey sky, knowing that a torrential downpour was imminent.
He fixed up his coffee quickly, just a tiny splash of milk to dull the edge of the bitter liquid, and then, figuring he had a few hours before the rain returned at full force, he headed out to drink his coffee on the small balcony. He took a seat in one of the chairs, curling his knees up toward his chest as he gazed out over the roiling sea.
His mind drifted, but he bit down on his lip sharply in an attempt to distract himself from the thoughts he was purposely avoiding. Though he’d half expected it, Charlie still jumped when he heard the balcony door creak open.
“You said you were coming back to bed,” Nick whined, sleepiness evident in his voice.
