Summary
The Long Turn does not turn hours. It turns lifetimes, once, and only backwards.
Hermione lands on the lawn below the Astronomy Tower on the first of September, 1942, with her arm burned to the elbow and a page of arithmancy crushed in her fist. The corrections on it are in her own handwriting. She has not written them yet.
She has one lie to survive on: that she is Hermione Dagworth-Granger of the Geneva branch, and Geneva has been sealed since August, and there is nobody left who can say otherwise. She has one route home: a device with seven rings that needs nine, built on mathematics that exist in no book in the library.
And she has one person in the castle who could do that mathematics. He reads the casualty lists every morning for reasons of his own. He has already noticed that her Sorting took eight minutes.
He does not fall in love with her instead of becoming what he becomes. That was never on the table. What happens is worse, and slower, and she agrees to every step of it.
