Curious, Shane drags Yuna and Natalya out to the garage, where they stand awkwardly next to David and watch with equal parts rapt fascination and horror as Ilya bangs the baseball bat against the car’s alternator. Hard.
“Uh, hey kid,” David tries between bangs. “I don’t think—” Ilya stops beating the alternator, then walks back around to the driver’s seat and turns the keys in the ignition.
The car starts smoothly.
“Spring in the alternator,” Ilya tells his small crowd of onlookers. “Sometimes it gets crooked in the housing. You can right it with a few hits. Many people don’t know this and just buy a new alternator.”
“Wow,” David grins, accepting the keys Ilya tosses his way. “Thanks, kid.” Ilya winks at him, then winks at Shane, who’s about three seconds away from jumping his bones. Ilya knows it too, because as they all shuffle back into the house, he crowds in close to Shane’s personal space and whispers directly in his ear, “I’ll bang your alternator tonight, baby.” Shane shoves his face away with his full palm, laughing all the while.
