Max glanced at the clock as he lowered to volume of the wireless, which was broadcasting a radio play of Othello. It was half past ten. Who would be calling by at this time of night? The bell rang again, accompanied by a frantic knocking. Whoever was out there wanted Max’s attention, and wanted it fast.
“Yes, I’m coming!” Max shouted as he rose, tightening the chord of his red housecoat before making his way to the door, pulling it open to reveal- “Morse!”
The policeman stood warily on his stoop, shaking as if he was cold, despite it being August. He held one coat-clad arm close to his chest and with his spare hand rubbed at his red eyes.
